I follow Dr Rhonda Patrick and nerd out on health science and today was one of my favorite posts yet! This is for all my coffee loving friends!
"A very recent randomized controlled trial found consumption of dark roast coffee brew (500 ml/day) for 1 month caused a 23% reduction in DNA damage in white blood cells compared to baseline levels. DNA damage can accelerate the aging process and lead to cancer.
DNA damage leads to accelerated telomere shortening, which is a bio marker for aging. This data was randomized controlled trial which is able to establish causation and is consistent with a couple other randomized controlled trials that have also shown coffee reduces oxidative damage in white blood cells. It is also in line with epidemiological studies that have shown coffee consumption is associated with significantly longer telomeres in a dose-dependent manner (meaning more cups of coffee were associated with longer telomeres). In addition, other associative studies have shown that people who consumed at least four cups of coffee per day had a 64% lower risk of all-cause mortality than those who never or almost never consumed coffee. There was a 22% lower risk of all-cause mortality for every two additional cups of coffee per day. Mechanistic studies in animals and in cell culture have found that several compounds in coffee are able to induce potent anti-oxident and repair pathways including glutathione transferase induction and autophagy". Not a bad deal for those of us who drink a pot a day 🤪 The name of the study is on her latest post. #coffee#coffeelover#nerdingout#healthscience#research#imabeliever#workingmom#workinggirl#boymom#youngforever#foreveryoung#illtakeit#drrhondapatrick
