  • Early that morning orcas swam into the protected bay where we were anchored. After I helped the hikers, kayakers, and boats get launched for the day I saw the orcas were still nearby. Overwhelmed by excitement, I launched my kayak in a hurry, paddled as fast as I could deep into the bay and was thrilled to spot the orcas again. • I had launched in such a hurry I didn’t have time to grab a camera, so I tried to get some video with my phone, but it wasn’t worthwhile. So I put the phone down (often key to enjoying life’s best moments anyways) and just embraced the incredible experience of being in my kayak as orcas hunted and played nearby— spyhopping, tail lobbing, even playing with a fishing buoy. • I joined other paddlers and we navigated through the small islands so we could watch from a respectful distance, without getting in the way of the orcas or disturbing other wildlife, like a terrified harbor seal hiding in the rocky shoreline. • Paddling with orcas was definitely a highlight of all the summers I’ve spent in Alaska. 💙 Thanks to a guest for sharing her photos with me. • • • I’m paddling with a Lendal Storm, available at www.lendalna.com

  • The best advice I heard last week was - Take a little vacation every day! I’m in. . I got away from my desk, bundled up and went on a walk with great views of the water. When I got home I cruised through some paddle board yoga photos. That’s me on the left, 3 spots in. . I couldn’t have asked for better teachers when I was learning to get comfortable on the board. Many thanks to @suphydrology @catalystyoganw @authenticgatheringspnw for it all.💙 If you are in the PNW they hold retreats, for all levels, that you will be sure to love. . What is the best advice you’ve gotten recently? I’m listening.

  • “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.” ~ Steve Jobs Happy to announce that I’ve partnered with Nalu Standup Paddle & Surf @Nalu_sup to develop new paddle programs for 2019, including fitness classes, tours, adventures, SUP-centric travel, race coaching and “The Erie Series.” This is something I have wanted to do for a while and now it’s happening. I absolutely love paddling and the freedom of being on the water and I’m excited to be able to share that stoke with as many people as possible. My goal is to provide fun, new SUP experiences and events, while promoting an active, healthy lifestyle. I know many of my friends on here have expressed interest in paddling and exploring with me, and now not only do I have the resources to make that happen, but I have some awesome adventures planned. And you know I know all the sweet places to paddle! 😉 Huge thanks to all my friends supporting me in this mission and everyone who called or texted after the article hit the other day - you know who you are. Shout out to Laura from @rockthelakecle for the nice write up in @clevelanddotcom (Link in bio). And thank you Nalu Bill for sharing this vision and believing in me. 2019 is going to be lit y’all 🔥🔥🔥 #nalusup

  • I'm starting to crave the water 💙 Do you ever get that feeling of missing the water? It's been a while since I've been on the water and I feel it! I'm in the jungle in Bali right now and am definitely feeling the need to find the water soon. I miss how it calms and soothes my soul and how I feel when I'm around it. Luckily the beach isn't that far away! #tbt to this magical day one year ago on Lake Atitlan with amazing views and amazing people. @panasurf_atitlan and @anvicah I miss you guys!

  • My friend Hannah called me today. This is not a post about her. But we both love nature and hike or kayak together whenever I am in Kentucky. However, I travel hundreds of miles away from home for my job. So I enjoy those things *alone* most of the time. For whatever reason (concern, ignorance) when people learn that I go outside alone, they feel inclined to tell me stories about women who have been murdered. They suggest I find someone (ie. A STRANGER since I am 1200 miles from home) to go with me and protect me. They tell me to go find friends. BUT I THOUGHT PEOPLE WERE BAD AND WOULD MURDER ME. WHICH IS IT. Here's the truth: I live with an anxiety and panic disorder... And I *THRIVE* by being in nature as often as possible. My brain literally needs it. When people tell me to find more humans to go into nature with, they are telling me that I am failing at taking care of myself properly. Fuck that. Stop it. Meeting new people is exhausting and frustrating and scary and hard to do in small towns. ESPECIALLY BECAUSE THEY ARE AFRAID I MIGHT MURDER THEM. But also, I love making friends and it hurts my soul to the very core when people suggest I'm not trying hard enough to have them. Watching the sunset from my kayak alone is easy. And it is not scary. Are there risks? Yes. Just as much as it is risky to drive to work every day and eat taco bell for lunch. I want this attitude to shift from encouraging women to fear. To arming women with the tools they need to be safe, healthy, and independent in the world. Stop discouraging us from experiencing life. What if, instead of telling girls and women that a man might hurt them if they went outside, we taught them how to be better prepared for threats? What if we helped them to become stronger and wiser and well equipped? What if we made men TERRIFIED to hurt us? Imagine a world full of women kayaking and hiking to their heart's content. Wouldn't it be a much less scary place if it was crawling with strong, smart, happy women? Wouldn't that be so much better than women hiding alone in their homes and dying from suicide and depression? Let's discuss.

  • The Ladies paddle this morning would not have happened without our renters! The weather was not ideal, the city closed the park due to high winds. We were ready to call it but these ladies showed up and were up for the adventure! So glad we went out, nothing can rain on our paddle parade! #paddlelodi #womenwhopaddle #flatwater #kayaking #kayakingadventures
