  • Happy Lunar New Year! 2018 ushers in the Year of the Dog: a notable change of pace from 2017’s Year of the Rooster. Unlike the cockiness (pardon the pun) of the Rooster, the Dog is most admired for it’s loyalty, honesty, friendliness, and sense of justice. 🐕 As with all creatures, there are both light and dark shades within our 2018 canine companion. Some “negative” dog qualities can include a sense of worry, over-thinking, and undue anxiety (think separation anxiety for those with pups!). When overwhelmed, we may focus irrationally on our fear, paralyzed from striving for the solution. However, with their resilience, and a healthy dose of natural optimism, Dogs can overcome these obstacles. This is true with the Dog energy, and is true within us all! 🐕 This year we’re reminded to focus on the can’s and do’s, rather than the have’s and have not’s. How can we nurture our human pack and therefore ourselves? How do we push ourselves forward to build a safe and solid infrastructure around us? This year calls on us to be kind and playful to ourselves as we follow this journey. 🐕 Focus on the abundance we can create through the vehicles we love, and lean in to the qualities that help you remain steadfast. Most importantly, embody the gifts of joy that this year has to offer. From all of us at Sanctuary (and our favorite mascots featured here!), we wish you a prosperous new year filled with happiness and plenty. ✨ Love, Sanctuary ❤️ . Illustration 🎨 @huebucket

  • As mercury drops, joint aches rise❄️🔥 Winter can be the season of joint pain for many people young and old. It could be that our muscles, ligaments, and joints just get stiffer with lower temperatures, but we sure notice the difference between 90-degree summer days and frigid winter overnight temps. Here are a couple of ways to protect vulnerable joints as the weather grows cold. Feel the (exercise) burn When cold winds blow, staying cozy indoors is more tempting than taking a walk – but staying active is better for function and mobility. Cutting down on activity only leads to decreased range of motion and more joint pain. Many people who become less active in the winter tend to put on a few pounds And we know, especially with the knees, that even 5 pounds can make a difference in the degree of pain. Get Some Clothes On! Dress warmly and in layers, it's important to keep the core body temperature warm. Keeping joints warm is also essential, along with surrounding muscles and ligaments. Gloves, scarves, warm boots, long johns – who knows, maybe even legwarmers (you can revive a trend!) – protect your skin and joints from outdoor cold exposure. Dress for the changing weather, if it's going to be 38 degrees, and you tend to wear shorts year-round, put some pants on. Go Fishing...well, not literally! Try increasing foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like Salmon or Chia seeds, as this may help you reduce joint pain and inflammation and remember to combine with supplements high in Glucosamine to keep your joints in tip-top condition Tell us in the comments below how you feel when it's cold⤵️ _____________________ #DrJsNatural #jointhealth #calcium #bones #healthy #healthyfood #beautysupplements #beautyinsider #vitamins #supplement #bblogger #lablogger #health #naturalista #healyourbody #beautywithin #supplements #healthylifestyle #healthtips #esthetician #selfcare #zoesquad #skincare #lifestyle #wellness #winterhealth #fitmom #fitspo

  • Ginger – A home remedy super hero! One of the things that inspires me most about being an herbalist are the miraculous healing remedies that can be born from the most common of ingredients. We may not think of it, but most of these ingredients became common because of their healing properties! Many people already know about ginger; they have tasted it, seen the roots at the store and even cooked with it. For many of us it is a common household ingredient or item in our pantry. Sometimes in the Art of Home Herbalism or the Art of Home Herbalism Online students arrive thinking they are going to be bombarded by things they have never heard of, eye of newt and toe of frog perhaps…but it is almost never like that. Your kitchen pantry is likely already teeming with healing ingredients that can be used to create a rich array of home remedies to support everyday ailments. One of the most rewarding things about teaching is seeing, time and time again, that learning about common household remedies is just as exciting for students as learning about exotic things they have never heard of! Discovering mystery in the everyday brings magic to life. Ginger, Zingiber officinale, is a rhizome native to southeast Asia. It is pungent and aromatic, with a warming, stimulating energetic effect on the body. Let’s look at some of the ways it can be prepared and applied in home remedies. ginger-and-turmeric Digestion Ginger’s warming energetics stimulate digestive fire and metabolism. An excellent appetite stimulant, ginger is a great tea for almost everyone to have first thing in the morning to break the night’s fast and prepare the digestive metabolism for food. If you have a slow metabolism or suffer from gas, bloating or other discomforts following eating, try ginger tea before or after meals. Ginger tea is also good for nausea and morning sickness. For those prone to mucus production in the upper or lower respiratory system, ginger tea is a great way to warm up digestion and prevent mucus production. Those with heartburn or acid reflux may find that ginger aggravates symptoms. #ginger #herbalremedies #winterhealth

  • Ticks don’t have seasons. Ticks are hanging out, just below that blanket of snow. And they’re hungry. Please, be aware, continue to use repellent, and do your tick checks. @ctvnews just featured a short story about winter ticks and told a story of a hunter who scraped off hundreds, yeah, hundreds of baby ticks of of himself. Lesson? Please be aware, do your tick checks, and consider ticks to be a year-round problem. . . . #lymediseaseawareness #holidays #winter #snow #lymefacts #spoonie #lymie #winterhealth #tickseason

  • Flu is much worse than a heavy cold and can leave you bedridden for 2-3 days or even hospitalised. Symptoms come on suddenly and sometimes severely. Did you know that flu cannot be treated using antibiotics? This is because antibiotics are only effective against bacteria. Flu is caused by viruses and taking antibiotics when you don’t need them will lead to antibiotic resistance. We are giving away a  #FREE Cough, Cold & Flu check woth £100 with every Everyman and Everywoman Programme purchased in December so find out for sure if you really need those antibiotics. • Pine needle honey is a taste of the wild woods, of fresh air and summer dreaming and makes a special handmade gift for loved ones. Easy to prepare- simply cut pine needles and thin branches into a glass jar, cover with local honey and leave by a wood stove or warm area for a week or two. For quicker preparing- place filled jar into a hot water bath for an hour, waiting till the honey cools before placing in a warm spot for a few days. Strain and bottle, label and share your gift of love and tree healing. Nice in winter teas, added to cough syrups or for a sweet moment! #pineneedlehoney #whitepinedelight #treemedicine #winterhealth #herbhoneys #treegift

  • Eucalyptus leaves make for a great steam inhalation, and also a nice winter treat. Head to your local #herbalist or health food shop, grab some dried eucalyptus leaves (although fresh are good too, just not quite as strong)... add 3-4tsp into bowl, pour 4 pints boiling water on top of leaves, put your head over the bowl (CAREFULLY) and cover with a towel. Stay there for about 10 minutes breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. NOTE... do not go out for a little while after doing a steam as the mucous membranes will be sensitive for a while. #eucalyptus #steam #winterhealth #wellness #healthyliving #plantpowered #staywell #naturalremedy #homecare

  • Did you know that our dogs can suffer with arthritis and joint issues? Here are our top tips to help your fur babies stay comfortable this winter: 1- Keep their weight healthy: the more extra weight they carry, the more strain on their joints 2- Keep them actives: If they struggle with longer walks, try frequent shorter walks. 3- Massages: not only it will soothe your dog’s aches, but it’s also a great way to bond. 4- Keep them comfy: make sure they have a comfortable and supportive bed, and put down rugs to increase grip on hard floors, as dogs can struggle with hard wood and tiles 5- Supplements – ask your vet about how to best supplement your dog’s diet. • . ☀️ VITAMIN D ☀️ Just a friendly reminder to make sure there’s some vitamin d on that Christmas shopping list 🙃 Winter solstice is approaching and those days are getting shorter and shorter and it’s harder to get enough vitamin d from the sunshine. ☀️ What is vitamin d? It helps us to control the amount of calcium and phosphate in our bodies. We need them for healthy bones, teeth and muscles 💪🏻 🐟 🥩 🍳 You’ll find it in some food like oily fish, red meat, liver and egg yolk. It’s also in fortified cereals and spreads ☀️ What happens if we don’t get enough? Vitamin d deficiency can lead to a loss of bone density which can lead to osteoporosis and fractures. But for most of us we might notice feeling 💤tiredness and fatigue ☹️ depression 🤒 getting sick or infected often 💪🏻 muscle pain 🤦🏼‍♀️ hair loss . We can’t get enough vitamin d in these dark winter months from food alone so we should all be taking a supplement. This is the NHS guidelines: Please check out “new guidelines on vitamin d - what you need to know’ on the nhs website for a more detailed explanation. 💊 Adults and children over the age of 1 should considering taking a daily supplement contains 10mcg in autumn and winter. The new advice actually says that children 1-4 should be taking daily 10mcg supplement all year round. 💊 If you have a high risk for vitamin d deficiency take it all year round (I will be as I now have to live in factor 50 for the rest of my life.....and you don’t get the vitamin d with spf on) 💊 People with dark skin, may not get enough vitamin d from sunlight in the summer, so should also consider a year round supplement ☀️ So stick some sunshine on the Christmas shopping list if you don’t already take a supplement. 💞

  • Where are my last minute shoppers? (Don't worry I'm virtually raising my hand too). As we get closer and closer to the end of the year, it always makes me think about what I REALLY WANT FOR CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR! Any guesses? Well, let me give you some hints, it can't be bought online, or even in a store and it so often gets forgotten especially this time of year. Ok ..Ok... I'll spill, it's HEALTH, actually specifically your health. If there is one thing I wish I could give to each and every one of you, it would be your health. Although I know this isn't actually possible, (I mean it would be a bit of a request for Santa🎅), I hope that this holiday season while you spend quality time with your loved ones that you take some time to realize how irreplaceable you and your health really are. When it comes to health, we so often dismiss it until it no longer exists. So as the year begins to end, I hope you take time to write down a few ways you will actively start to make your health count. I don't mean the annual " join a gym and lose weight". But instead, in what ways will you actively make your health count. This might mean taking that tai chi class you have always been interested in taking or maybe its finally going in for that colonoscopy your doctor has been telling you to get done for the last few years. I know these don't sound so glamorous but these are the gifts your children and grandchildren will cherish forever because it will mean they will have more time and memories to share with you. So although you can't actually buy time, make your health a priority this year to help you have more time to love, laugh and play. xoxo Dr. Zen #coldandfluseason #coldandfluremedy #applecidervinegar #naturalwellness #immunebooster #healthtips #scottsdale #northscottsdale #drzen #fallcolors🍁🍂 #fall #winterhealth #wellness #wellnessdoctor #naturalmedicine #cancerawareness #heartdiseaseawareness #cinnamon #braggsapplecidervinegar #organic #nongmo #nontoxic #coldseason #scottsdalemoms #crunchymama #organicfood #nongmo #fitmama #healthhacks #newyearsresolution
