It’s no secret that I love wine from Dry Creek Valley, which is home to many award-winning and small-but-mighty wineries. One of my favs is @dutchercrossing - I highly recommend their Pinot Noir and Zinfandel 😍
Have you heard of Dry Creek Valley?
Racking is the process of moving wine from one vessel to another using gravity with the purpose of removing the sediment and lees. This step is completed to help clarify the wine, prevent negative flavors developing from the lees and sediment, and create a desired flavor profile.
Racking takes place an average of three times during the winemaking process: once during fermentation, once after fermentation and once more after fining. Winemakers can choose to do additional rackings, or they can choose not to rack at all (a process called “sur lie aging”). Either choice will result in a different flavor profile in the wine.
Book-wine pairing time! “Counterlife” is the fourth Philip Roth novel to feature Nathan Zuckerman. Divided into five (somewhat self-contradictory) parts, it is a meditation on fate, free will, renewal, escape. It illuminates lives in the eye of change’s hurricane; that moment when you gaze calmly at the chaos surrounding you, wondering, what if ....? We travel from New Jersey, to London, to a settlement in Israel’s West Bank. 📚
What on earth does one drink with such a hilariously serious, fizzingly fierce, bold book? One that also manages to take the formal craft of writing, flip it upside down, turn it inside out and wave the seams that stitch it all together in the reader’s face? (I’m interested, but I bat it away in favor of the fiendishly paced plot.)
Why not Harney Lane’s 2015 Petite Sirah? Like “Counterlife,” it’s a compelling study of personal evolution via both style and substance. It’s produced by a winemaking family who decided to drastically alter the course of their journey. Since 1907, the same family has been living on the land they farm sustainably in the Lodi AVA, east of the San Francisco Bay. But after growing grapes for other winemakers for five generations, in 2006, they delved into winemaking themselves. All of their wines are 100% estate-grown and #certifiedgreen. Grown 70 miles from the Pacific, Lodi wines can feature characteristics more associated with the Mediterranean than California. This Petite Sirah is supple and lush, offering up a rich bouquet of juicy red fruit, pecans, baking spices and stands up the spicy feasts, like Indian curries, Mexican moles and Roth novels.

Little teaser video of a visit to Babylonstoren last week. It’s been quiet here (lots of travels) + working hard on some personal projects and can’t wait to share more soon. Too short of a visit in between work days, but what an amazing place. Prettiest gardens one can think of, incredible wines, farm to table food — ❤️

If you've ever stayed with dull people during what is alleged to be the festive season, you can probably revise that saying. It needed perhaps all the music that could be mustered in the town to remind the beleaguered garrison and inhabitants that the festive season was upon them.
