The Wolf of Gubbio, c.1437-44. Egg tempera on poplar wood. 87 x 52-4 cm. National Gallery, London. Stefano di Giovanni –Sassetta (fl. 1427)
This painting was part of the group (the San Sepolcro Altarpiece) intended for the high altar of San Francesco, in Borgo Sansepolcro, to honour the life of St Francis of Assisi. It was meant to represent a two-sided polyptych; the front –the Virgin and Child with Saints– and the back, a few scenes from the life of the founder of the Franciscans for the friars to contemplate. The representation of the story of the Gubbio wolf is the only one that is not based on Bonaventure’s vita of St Francis (the Legenda maior) but on the I Fioretti di San Francesco. Legends are full of special details but, as I do not wish to enter into narrating the story itself, I can simply say that the taming of wild beasts by holy persons is something of a classic topic in hagiographies. Yes, St Francis tamed the wolf that had eaten some inhabitants of Gubbio but the sermon (could it be otherwise?) he addressed the people of Gubbio touched their hearts and they accepted the repentant wolf into the town as another member of the society.
In the painting, therefore, the paw gently laid on St Francis’s hand represents the moment in which the wolf accepted the deal offered by the saint by which all the people in town would kindly offer food for free if only the beast would stop attacking them.
Even before his untimely dead, Francis was considered a saint, and he is, perhaps, the best known and the most honored of Catholic saints.
The heretic atmosphere of St Francis’ time, which ran rampant during the twelve and thirteenth centuries, was an important element of the equation of sainthood and obedience to the Church on the part of the saint. Penitents groups abounded and went from town to town preaching about sin and repentance. We cannot forget the Albigensian crusade that the Pope launched in 1209 against the south of France heretics. Francis secure papal approval for his community and, therefore, his group would be free of any (likely) accusation of unorthodoxy. Well, that is another story that is well off bounds this art section! JesúsLV.

“Il rumore ti fa allontanare dal tuo 'suono' e fa ammalare il cuore"
C'è un posto speciale nel tuo cuore dove potrai trovare rifugio dal dolore.
Lì trovi protezione dall'ansia e paura.
E' il Divino Mistero che di te si cura.
Viene chiamato Daimon, Atman, Sè;
Rimani affacciato a quella finestra.
Aspetta, con pazienza, la risposta.
Nella mente silenziosa è nascosta.
Solo così si attiverà il navigatore:
la sicura Guida interna senza errore.
Prima di andare a dormire stasera,
recita, con fede, questa preghiera:
"Oh Luce interiore della Saggezza,
ti affido la mia ansia, la mia tristezza.
Nessuno conosce la mia sofferenza.
La tengo segreta nella mia coscienza.
Sarà il nostro segreto, mia Guida interiore:
silenzio e accoglienza per una vita migliore!" Input: " #Riza psicosomatica" - #RaffaeleMorelli
