  • 🐻 Cangas de Onís, Asturias, Spain - Monastery of San Pedro de Villanueva ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ⓒ Peter Callas 2019. All Rights Reserved. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ San Pedro de Villanueva is located on the outskirts of the fabled town of Cangas de Onís in Asturias in the north of Spain. This town was the first capital of Christian Spain, and is intimately associated with the very beginnings of the 800 year long Reconquista - the retaking of the Iberian peninsula from the Moors. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The monastery is one of the best examples of Asturian Romanesque art. It originated in the 8th century, but the earliest remains date from the early 12th century. Legend has it that the church was built by Ermesinda, the wife of the Visigothic King Alfonso I, who was the son of the Asturian national hero, Don Pelayo, who fought victoriously against Umayyad forces at the Battle of Covadonga in 722. It was supposedly built on the place where King Favila, father of Ermesinda, died as a result of a bear attack while hunting. Favila was the 2nd King of Asturias from 737 until his death just 2 years later. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The elaborately carved south portal has 3 scenes from the last day of Favila, showing him on the first metope, kissing his wife as he departs for a day of hunting. He is mounted on horseback with a falcon perched on his hand. This panel was covered and was only rediscovered in the 19th century. The next scene, on the first capital, also shows the farewell to Froiluba, again kissing, this time at the doors of the royal palace and, finally, around the corner of the same capital the king’s fatal fight with the bear is shown in the midst of pulchritudinous foliage. The next capital returns to the palace, where Froiluba, with her hands on her hips (and her mouth gagged?), angrily (?) laments the king's death and, depicted around the corner, remembers him in hunting mode again. The sequence concludes on the third capital, where King Favila appears in the arms of winged angels, who fight for his soul in front of a demon in the form of a dragon. Some historians have pointed out that this series can be seen as a generalised allegory in which the knight represents the good Christian on his journey with Christ.
