  • Wall Sessions - David Ellis (artist) - Boost Mobile, Freedom Drive, Charlotte NC . . . We always seem to forget how everything and everyone in the South seems to be related - not in a bad way - just a fact. . . . I guess we shouldn’t be surprised when a mural jumps out at us and when we get a little bit of history on it and the artist, we find a tie to one of our favorite places! . . . On the side of the Boost Mobile building on Freedom Drive in Charlotte, NC, a mural caught our eye and we had to pull over to get pictures. We always try to find out the rest of the story about the places we visit, the people we meet and the amazing things we see. Sometimes we can find a story by talking to people around the area, sometimes people give us a tip on who to talk to and sometimes we just plain have to research it! And that’s where we were with mural on Boost Mobile. . . . We found out that starting 2017, Juxtapoz Magazine and Boost Mobile jointly presented the “Wall Sessions”. This project went around the US and asked some well known artists to paint a mural in the city they lived in. . . . And there it was - the name we recognized and the artist we are amazed by! Yep, David Ellis! Remember those barns in Cameron? We need to go back to that parking lot and do a little happy dance! . . . Everything and everyone in the South really IS related! And we like it! . . . #thees #the_eccentric_south #godlovesyardart #graffitiart #graffiti #graffitiartist #yardart #outsiderart #visionaryart #artenvironment #roadsideattraction #roadsideamerica #exploreNC #explorecharlotte #southernfolkart #folkart #roadtrip #roadtripping #fijifilmx100t #davidellis #boostmobile #mural #juxtapoz #wallsessions

  • Doll Hut- Anaheim, Ca #jeromylookneon This place was originally built in the early 1900's as a private residence. Then in 1930s became a truck stop called The Sunkist Cafe. In 1957 The Doll Hut was born as a full bar. Then in 1989 It was made famous by promoter and new owner Linda Jemison. During the 90's bands like The Offspring, Sublime, Jimmy Eat World, Reel Big Fish, Sugar Ray, Korn, and Brian Setzer (to name a few) all came through and performed here. The bar is still open today and still features local bands. The bar is cash only. #jeromylookneon

  • Last week I went skiing. On my way home I pulled over for a cup. As I entered, a petite, seasoned barista, warmth in her eyes, a welcome ready on her lips, greeted me. Banter between her and a weathered truck driver filled up her tiny warming hut. She encouraged me to fill up my mug from the thermos as they chatted. As I approached the counter to pay, I paused. Something was missing from the counter top - baskets of baked goods, napkins and sweetener cluttered around a small, metal cash box. Do you... “Accept cards?” She smiled, finishing my sentence. “Only cash Dear.” I looked down at the coffee already in my travel mug, trying to remember if I had cash, stashed away in my car. I looked up, just as the truck driver slid a few bills across the counter. He tipped his hat, as a muttered a ‘thank you.’ And he headed out to his truck. “Most days,” the barista said, “working here is the best part of my day.” . How incredible that small, roadside pit stop turned out to be.

  • Monuments of States - Kissimmee, FL . . . Ever see something and say to yourself, “what were they thinking”? . . . That was our first reaction when we saw the Monument of States in Florida! At first glance, it’s this cool and unusual statue featuring rocks. Ok. But, yeah, ok. . . . Then we figured it might be a good idea to find out what this rock monument was for and why it is here. . . . In 1942 after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Dr. Charles Bressler-Pettis thought building a statue of rocks from each state in the US was a great way to show our solidarity and our unified support. . . . He wrote letters to every governor and to the president requesting rocks and fossils for the statue. He received at least one from each of the 48 states and a rock from President Roosevelt’s estate. A rock from the governor of Puerto Rico and the Prime Minister of Canada were also included in the initial build. His statue was completed and dedicated in 1943. When Hawaii and Alaska became states, their rocks and the rocks of 21 countries were added. . . . Standing quietly for the next 58 years, the tower aged and began to deteriorate. And then, in 2001 following the 9-11 attacks, Ms. Ronnie Markowitz gathered support from several organizations and volunteers to restore the statue to its original World War II appearance. . . . And suddenly, there is a bigger answer to the question - “What were they thinking”? . . . #thees #the_eccentric_south #godlovesyardart #folkart #roadsideamerica #roadsideattraction #roadsideattractions #explorethesouth #uniquesouth #artenvironments #outsiderart #art #roadtrip #roadtrippin #southernfolkart #visionaryart #yardart #fujifilmx100t #respecttheart #southernartists #statues #kissimmee #explorefl #monumentofstates

  • Funny Story #3: It's Really NOT Marijuana I have an unfortunate habit of teasing tourists and one day a husband and wife couple stopped by to tour the Park. I overheard their conversation and realized they were both police officers from Colorado. I immediately said, "Oh, you're here to arrest me!" They asked, "What for?" I said, "My marijauna crop," and pointed at a strip of hemp plants growing by the fence adjacent to the nearby soybean field. South Dakotans know that hemp plants grow wild and can get to 10 feet tall. They are also called ditch weed and are worthless as far as mind altering properties go. The woman said, "Can we go look at that?" I said, "You think Colorado is the only place that does marijauna tourism?" and marched right over there with them. They took , oh I don't know, I'm guessing .....a HUNDRED of pictures of these hemp plants . It dawned on me that they weren't getting the joke and they were going to have me arrested. I told them, "You don't understand. Nobody cares about these plants, cows won't even eat them. They're a weed, they grow wild. I pointed at a Canadian Thistle plant and said, "You don't want to get caught with this, because they'll put you in the weed pokey." ( Canadian Thistle regulations are tightly enforced by South Dakota officials.)I continued, "It's those darn Canadians, arrest the Canadians. " They went on the Sculpture Park tour as I sat there and worried about the outcome. When they got back, I'd had enough time to worry and started teasing them again. "Take all of the hemp you want, just don't tell anyone. " The woman started making slashing motions at her neck in a not so subtle attempt to have me stop talking. Apparently her husband was taking this seriously. They left the Park. I didn't get arrested, and I'm not aware of any Canadians who did either. #portersculpturepark #southdakota #art #funnystory #hemp #canadianthistle #prairie #roadsideattraction #roadtrip #justkidding #summervacation

  • Flashback Friday! #roadsideattraction no. 79 Hey guys, I'm literally at the airport about to catch a flight back to Melbourne for a birthday. With a little luck I'll have the means and a car to indulge in a little sculpture and street art culture. So since I'm heading back home I thought I'd be fun to share something I visited back in October. ______________ There is a giant Kewpie Baby Doll on an old establishment in Fitzroy, VIC. Once upon a time the premise use to be home to a doll store and while it looks permanently closed (hard to tell in Fitzroy) the doll has survived.
