  • Day 20 - 15.01.2019 From Bern 🇨🇭 to Kirkenes 🇳🇴 by train & ship - 4307 km North on the ground - NO PLANES! When I saw Kirkenes on the map, so the easternmost town in Norway, I realized that Russia was not that far anymore. So since I saw how close the border was, I planned walking there from Kirkenes. I knew that I wouldn't be allowed to cross without a VISA. But anyway on this trip I wouldn't have had enough time to explore Russia. This was more some kind of tasting a bit of Russian air. I think we are sometimes not aware of how big this country is and what an immense cultural diversity it has. The Norwegian-Russian border is almost 200 km long and protected by the Grensejeger garnison. It is one of the most challenging tasks in the Norwegian army. Up here it can get up to -42°C cold and many of the towers are exposed to weather and wind. In summer mosquitos are bloodthirstier than anywyere else. This means knowing how to use a snowmobile as well as riding on a boat. Skiing and walking under harsh weather conditions is daily business for them. Did you know, that you're not allowed to cross the border on foot? In 2015 when there were about 5000 migrants crossing it, suddenly huge containers popped up on the Russian side and guys were making a business out of this law.

  • Day 18 - 13.01.2019 From Bern 🇨🇭 to Kirkenes 🇳🇴 by train & ship - 4307 km North on the ground - NO PLANES! I love sleeping on ships & boats, the swaying makes me sleep like a baby! The storm I was looking forward to didn't appear so it was a relatively calm night. Around 11 am we arrived to Honningsvåg, the northernmost city in Norway even if it only has about 2500 inhabitants. From here you can visit the North cape. Unfortunately the local bus needed at least 4 people to join if not it wouldn't leave. As I was the only one who hadn't booked the doublepriced Hurtigruten excursion I had to stay in town. That didn't bother me at all since I saw this nearby mountain smiling at me when we just arrived. There was not too much snow, so no avalanche danger at all. The views I had from up there were so much worth it and a thousand times better than visiting the North cape with a 300 other tourists. Next time anyway I'll be coming by bicycle and make it all the way to the North.

  • Day 17 - 12.01.2018 From Bern 🇨🇭 to Kirkenes 🇳🇴 by train & ship - 4307 km North on the ground - NO PLANES! So here I am again. Setting sails in Tromsø, Norway Heading further north. As I found out that these Hurtigruten ships can sometimes be really cheap- I'm paying aprox. 70 USD per night including breakfast - I decided to head to Kirkenes by ship again. Norway is expensive, so counting bus tickets, food and acommodation it is cheaper this way. Of course you have to be really lucky to find such cheap prices! Kirkenes is close to the Russian border. So what I actually want to do there is walking to the best protected border in Europe. As I don't have any VISA I won't be able to cross it. But at least I made it to the border of a country I'm keen on visiting before heading south again to visit my sister.

  • Day 14 - 09.01.2018 From Bern 🇨🇭 to Tromsø 🇳🇴 by train - 4307 km North on the ground - NO PLANES! Yesterday after 14 days travelling I finally reached Tromsø, the capital of the Arctic. Here live about 65'000 people around all the year. But despite the high latitude, the climate is not as harsh as you may expect it. The gulf stream has it's effect on it. I saw the sun for the last time on January, 6th. Daylight time has been around 3-4 hours since then. The first part of my trip is completed, but there's much more to come. Anyway yesterday evening I suddenly felt really tired. So I deciced to sleep early and post today. Maybe you expect my trip to be over now...but as some of you may have seen I'm going back down as well. So tomorrow I'll take a break and keep you updated again on Saturday! The most exciting part of the trip is still ahead!

  • I love this room so much! In the back area is a large wine section. Or in past years when I visited I remember seeing it. This hotel was opened by Henry Flagler, who was a brilliant man and businessman. He built the railway that lines east Florida to Key West. I also didn't realize he is known as the Father of Miami and Palm Beach. He also had the Standard oil company first based in Ohio, which produced so many household items we use today. John D. Rockefeller was quoted to say he wish he had come up with the ideas that Flagler did. If you get a chance, look into his life work and all the things that he left for his generation and the ones in the future. That is what inspires me!! A man, or woman, who thinks outside of their current culture to achieve great and lasting things that help mankind beyond themselves. And does not listen to people who try to tell them to do things their way, or how "it's always been done in business" or life. It's amazing to personally see all he left for us to enjoy. Average is good, but try for greatness if you are able to! #henryflagler #palmbeachisland #greatmen #businessmen #outsidethebox #lastinglegacy #thebreakerspalmbeach #eastflorida #railwayline #standardoilcompany #greatarchitecture #classicinteriors #classicarchitecture #italianrenaissance #vaultedceilings #paintedceiling #masterartist @thebreakers
