  • The (Little) Tower of Babel Pieter Bruegel the Elder c. 1568, oil on wood. ________ This is the third copy of the biblical Tower of Babel that was created by Bruegel; the first was a miniature on ivory which was lost, the second was named with the prefix ‘The Great’, and thirdly this painting- which is around half the size of the previous. This was painted around a decade after Bruegel had visited Rome and bears obvious recognition of the Colosseum. See the ‘Details’ highlight for closer examination of this piece. ________ #aocgallery #pieterbruegeltheelder #arthistory

  • It's never easy to get a big dog to go where you want him to go. And even harder when there are a bunch of soldiers running around looking for babies to kill -- most of which have now disappeared under later repaint. From Pieter Brueghel the Elder's Massacre of the Innocents (swipe for the entire composition) in the Royal Collection, now in the Charles II exhibition. #pieterbruegeltheelder #massacreoftheinnocents #mastiff #charlesiiartandpower #dogsinart

  • Pieter Bruegel the Elder, The Blind Leading the Blind, 1568, Distemper on linen canvas, 86 × 154cm, Museo di Capodimonte, Naples, Italy Pieter Bruegel the Elder 1525 - 1569 was the most significant artist of Dutch and Flemish Renaissance painting, a painter and printmaker from Brabant, known for his landscapes and peasant scenes. The Blind Leading the Blind  reflects Bruegel's mastery of observation. Each figure has a different eye affliction, including corneal leukoma, atrophy of globe and removed eyes. The men hold their heads aloft to make better use of their other senses. The diagonal composition reinforces the off-kilter motion of the six figures falling in progression. This painting reflects Bruegel's ability to create captivating allegorical works based on both religious doctrine and common maxims. The painting illustrates a passage found in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke -"and if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch" - but the phrase would have had the currency of a common saying, as it still does, and the curious mixture of empathy and grim amusement that the blind men's plight elicits needs no scriptural grounding. #art #arthistory #pieterbruegeltheelder #education #inspiration #learnmore #letsliveart #artisinmyblood #arteducator #renaissance

  • Hit! Pieter Bruegel de Oude on the last day at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. Bruegel's art is simply more human and generous than most painters. No big ego, not so self-obsessed. Bruegel paints you and me and everyone. Here • The Beggars • from 1568. One of his last paintings shows a pitiless depiction of human degradation, where malformed bodies twisting into a bizarre, limping round dance. Many hypotheses have been put forward to interpret this painting, particularly addressing the question of what the foxtails, hanging from the garments worn by the beggars, are meant to symbolize. The scene may be an allusion to Koppermaandag, the beggars' feast day held annually on the Monday after Epiphany, when the beggars would sing as they begged for alms in the streets. The composition could also be an example of the carnivalesque tradition of the world upside-down. In this case, the work would be a satirical parody, with the beggars representing the different classes of a society on the road to ruin. The classes are indicated by their headgear: a cardboard crown for the king, a paper coiffe for the army, a beret for the bourgeoisie, a cap for the peasantry, and a bishop's mitre for the church. The painting is also thought to contain an allusion to the political situation of the day and the Beggars' Revolt against the Spanish occupation. In 1566 Calvinist lords tried to rally the minor nobility and the upper ranks of the bourgeoisie to form a sort of national unity, united by the cry "Vive le gueux" (long live the beggar!). It is thought that the foxtail was the symbol they used to show they belonged to the movement. #bruegel #brueghel #pieterbruegel #pieterbrueghel #pieterbruegeltheelder #art #artist #painter #painting #oil #panel #beggars #cripples #installation #foxtail #carnival #classes #revolt #symbolic #dance #parody #satirical #comedy #horror #human #genrepainting #renaissance #louvre #kunsthistorischesmuseum #vienna @museelouvre @kunsthistorischesmuseumvienna

  • Pieter Brueghel the Elder and his son were without doubt the masters of capturing Wintery coldness. Sadly I’m not going to make it to Vienna to see the once in a lifetime Pieter Brueghel the Elder exhibition (although I did see his Seasons there last year) and although the wonderful Hay Harvest had gone to Vienna on loan from Prague’s Lobkowicz Palace, I did see a couple of other little gems, brought from the other Lobkowicz palaces whilst it was away. There were also some delightful little pics by Brueghel the Younger in the Sternberg Palace in the castle. #brueghel #pieterbruegeltheelder #winter #lobkowiczpalace #prague #pictureframes #northernrenaissance

#pieterbruegeltheelder #pieterbrugel #bruegel #art #artist #Painter #painting #artlovers #artlover #titiwebster #read #see #instaart #save #artgallery #artmuseum #artmagazine

#pieterbruegeltheelder #artlovers #artist #bruegel #pieterbrugel #painting #Painter #art #titiwebster #1525 #Brussels #1569 #instaart
