  • - "As in sleeping-drink spices softly she loosens in the liquid-clear mirror her fatigued demeanor; and she puts her smile deep inside. - - And she waits while the liquid rises from it; then she pours her hair into the mirror, and, lifting one wondrous shoulder from the evening gown, - - she drinks quietly from her image. She drinks what a lover would drink feeling dazed, searching it, full of mistrust; and she only - - beckons to her maid when at the bottom of her mirror she finds candles, wardrobes, and the cloudy dregs of a late hour." - - - RAINER MARIA RILKE, 'Lady At A Mirror' - - - PAUL DELVAUX, 'Mirror', 1939. #pauldelvaux #Belgie #schilderkunst #kunstboeken #bookpics #booklovers #boeken  #whattoread #secondhand #bookstore #booksarelife #greatreads #readmorebooks #bookcover #deslegtemechelen

  • In Austria KRAMPUS comes tonight – a little scary helper of Saint Nicholas. It’s often interpreted as a melancholy review of the past. How do you interpret it? • (2018 • 17) Journey to the End of the Night by Louis-Ferdinand Céline First published in 1932. - I've decided this is possibly the most beautiful looking book that I own, the cover which features a detail from 'Train du Soir' by Paul Delvaux (1957), is fantastic. - This edition was published by Penguin books in 1966 (First Penguin edition). The cover shows a detail from a painting by Paul Delvaux.

  • Paul Delvaux ‘Landscape with Lanterns’ 1958 _ Currently on View The Albertina Museum @albertinamuseum _ Paul Delvaux's career developed in the shadow of Nazi Germany. It should not come as a surprise then, that his work is known for a distinct sense of anxiety and unease. Surprisingly, that anxiety is not expressed in overtly political subjects. Delvaux was instead interested in exploring humanity and the hidden recesses of the subconscious. He began his artistic training studying architecture in 1916, but soon shifted his focus to painting. While he initially found inspiration in European Expressionism, his mature style was inspired by an altogether different source: The Surrealists. Although he was not an official member of the Surrealists, he shared the group's interest in plumbing the depths of the mind. Like his contemporaries Giorgio de Chirico and René Magritte, Delvaux used bizarre subject matter rather than abstraction as a means of expressiveness. In so doing, he created uncomfortable scenes that were designed to emotionally shock the viewer. (Via: theartstory.org)

  • Jedno z moich odkryć po wizycie w wiedeńskim Albertina Museum. „Landscape with Lanterns”, 1958 by Paul Delvaux Obraz zrobił na mnie ogromne wrażenie, jest tajemniczy, po części mroczny, na pewno intrygujący.
