I had signed up to take a meal to someone who was recuperating from surgery. I was trying my best, but my best that week was take & bake pizza and a bag of salad. I wanted to at least bake some homemade brownies. (They’re homemade if you use a box mix but add chocolate chips, right?) As I started to make the brownies, I chuckled at the warning on the foil container: Always support the bottom. It was good advice. I wouldn’t want my brownies to end up in a heap on the floor. (Note: when taking food to others, any food that touches the floor goes in the trash. When it comes to serving your own family, I make no judgment.) But as I was driving to deliver the meal, I thought of that phrase on the bottom of the foil container again.
Always support the bottom
It reminded me of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet.
When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. John 13:12-15
Jesus bestowed a tremendous gift of humble service on his disciples: washing calloused, stinky, crusty feet. Humble service is what we are called to give to each other. When the bottom falls out of someone's life, we are called to offer a gift of support. That gift might be time spent together when you had something else on your list. That gift might be a grocery gift card anonymously placed in the mail. That gift might be semi-homemade brownies in a flimsy foil pan. Ultimately it is a reflection of the gift that God has given us: loving salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
