  • I often see the phrase highest self thrown around in the wellness community, including in my own writings. I think it’s a beautiful concept, and I just wanted to touch on what that term means to me. I believe highest self is who you truly are with all of your limiting beliefs, fears, and judgements stripped away. However, because this part of you does not judge or fear, it continues to remind us to trust and love, even when patterns of these same fears and judgements are triggered within us. Without fear or judgement, and for some people even deeper wounds that lead to feelings of aggression or hatred, what are we left with? Just love plain and simple, along with all of the good feelings that come with love: laughter, joy, peace, serenity. When we’re in this place is when we can best care for ourselves, others, and this world. But how do we get there? I believe it’s different for everyone. For me, meditation works. Music works. Anything that you deeply enjoy and can loose yourself in works. Fostering self awareness in order to slowly shift your thought patterns works. It’s felt in fleeting moments, but it’s always just waiting under the surface. It’s a slow, steady, life long practice. Our highest self does not stay near the surface without one part dedication and one part allowing.

  • i don’t take much time to relax. it’s never really been my groove. i like being on-the-go and getting ish done in a timely manner. i’ve always explained myself as Type-A, because that’s “who i am”. it’s in my blood. this weekend, i went off the grid. i took a day off of work. i jumped out of a plane. tyler and i stayed up till 3am eating his birthday cake and watching christmas movies. we ordered HELLA room service. we took more naps than i can count. i gambled... and cashed out after i won $12 - i bought a candy apple with my earnings — yesterday, after sleeping in till noon, we drove to a dog beach. we sat on the rocks in the sunshine & watched puppies play in the water. i felt so at peace. further proving the fact that relaxation is in my blood, too. i stopped “categorizing” myself about a year ago. i love to be on the go and get shit done. i also love to spend dayssss doing absolutely nothing. we all lock ourselves in a box that tells us “who we are”. how we should think, act, feel. maybe because it’s how we’ve always been. or maybe it’s what looks good on paper — the minute we unlock the box and open the door, we allow space for new ways of being to enter. we open our minds up to new experiences and ways of living. if we keep the door open, we allow things to flow in and out as they please, trusting the equilibrium of the universe. knowing that where we are, is exactly where we are meant to be 🌎✨

  • As we practice Yoga, we increase our body awareness and meditating and recognizing a pain in our bodies can be helpful to alleviate the painful sensation. How about we teach the kids to do that too? Let’s invite the child to sit and take a few conscious breaths and then start to focus their attention on the part of the body that has a boo-boo. Invite the child to speak to that part of their body, and ask questions. If it is something like growing pains, suggest the child to ask why the pain is there. If the child has a cut ask the boo-boo what would make it better? By doing that, you are helping your child to deal with the pain in different ways and teaching them skills to help alleviate it. . . . Assim que começamos a praticar yoga, aumentamos nossa consciência corporal e aprendemos que a qualquer sinal de dor, algo está acontecendo e que a meditação pode aliviar. Que tal ensinar isso para as crianças? Peça para seu filho sentar, fazer algumas respirações conscientes se possível e focar toda a sua atenção em alguma parte do corpo que tem um dodói. Se for por exemplo, dores de crescimento, sugira a criança perguntar por que a dor está ali. Se for um machucado com pele aberta, pergunte para o dodói o ele acha que pode ajudar a melhorar a dor. Repita esse processo alguma vezes.   • Today is a special day for me. It has been exactly one year since I officially did the refuge ceremony with the vows (though I didn't take all the vows, only the ones I thought I'd be able to keep) and commitments, after having thought about it seriously for months but not feeling ready. It has been a year of many major changes, most of them on my own initiative, and many which I do not think I would have been brave enough to go through with had it not been for trying to study and practice buddhism. Some days I have been beating myself up pretty bad for not feeling devotion and inspiration as often as in the beginning. But then again, maybe that has more to do with me no longer regarding the dharma as something exotic and romantic. Maybe I have somewhat succeeded in making familiar, routine and integrated in everyday life. Either way, I have managed to show up every day, even the worst ones. I may not have been showing up every moment of every day, but I have tried to do some peactice every day. At the very least, I have been observing my mind, as well as how I have been judging it. Not to try to resist or change the current state of mind, but simply to observe it - that has proven to be so difficult, and so necessary to aspire to learn. I am full of gratitude for having found this path, and also grateful to myself for sticking with it, even when it means coming face to face with the most uncomfortable parts of myself over and over again. I have become acutely aware of some disturbing tendencies in myself - like the constant ego-boosting, distractedness, and always expecting something in return - but I have also been less depressed, lesd angry and less easily offended, or at least better at dealing with it. Thank you all for sharing your reflections here, it is really inspiring, and for encouraging me to share mine. It is an important part of the process for me. Mindful confrontation with them can make it easier for us to gain the learning we require to fulfill our highest goals. In generic way, universe knows what's the best one deserves, in order to fulfill the role one needs to play in life; therefore, sometimes, without one's knowledge, suddenly life can embark to the direction one never apparently imagined of leaving one at a loss. However, if only one can acknowledge the change by looking deeply & mindfully, trying to figure out the silverling meaning of it and merge with it, everything will start making sense. And then, one will walk on the assigned path, one always meant to.
