While it’s too early to say for sure, there’s more snow coming today and these mountains are holding onto their powder from the last storm. #mtwhitney has gone into hiding and won’t be coming out until she’s completely dressed with her white #winter coat! #california needs the #snow and #rain!!!!

  • Our third flashback is to Yosemite National Park in California. We went out to San Francisco, California in October 2017 for a friend’s wedding and as our de facto honeymoon since traveling after our wedding wasn’t an option with a pending green card application for Ben and with all the vacation days gone anyways. We rented a car and headed out to Yosemite National Park for our first real hiking experience. We went along the Mist Trail and the John Muir Trail and the views did not disappoint. This is a view of Liberty Cap and Nevada Falls. The water flow was seasonally low so we didn't get soaked, it was gorgeous weather, and the trails weren't that crowded. Since this trip, we decided to go to more U.S. National Parks and have already made the trek to Yellowstone. Which National Park should we visit next? Follow us for more travel pictures and look out for our next flashback to Budapest, Hungary. #travel #travelling #travelgram #instatravel #wanderlust #aworldto #vacation #trip #nationalparks #yosemitenationalpark #yosemite #misttrail #johnmuirtrail #nevadafalls #libertycap #waterfall

  • Mt Muir class-3 scramble — a must-do on the way back down from Mt Whitney’s summit and a fine way to start a NOBO-thruhike of the John Muir Trail — most hikers walk right past the scree-chute to the summit without ever glancing up at it — on this day I showed the easiest line up the summit block to several hikers I met along the trail — it’s harder than it looks for the uninitiated, but a nice thrill once initial fears of falling are overcome

  • There's a certain stillness that engulfs a man’s soul when he returns to the places still wild. In a moment of time his burden lifts, a deep breath is drawn and he will think more clearly and attentively about absolutely nothing than he ever could about the most pressing duties that await him back amongst the civilized. Time moves slowly but with intentionality and every second, minute and hour that passes will change him; not just mind and spirit but biologically also. His ears are pricked to every sound, every falling leaf and creaking branch is noted, analyzed and arranged to paint a mental picture of what lies beyond his gaze. His eyes, fixed forward into the setting sun, scanning through the deep contrast of dark shadows in a tangled briar thicket, picking out subtle movement and dim silhouettes to discern what may be hidden beyond natural sight. Given adequate time his pulse will slow as his heart beat becomes syncopated with nature’s own clock. For an instant in time and space he will be the right man, in the right place and at the right time. Some explain away this phenomena as a man’s need to return to his primal nature, but that's not it at all. Alone tucked away in the timber surrounded by the angelic singing of birds and in the company of the old prophets as they disrobe their seasonal leaves this man becomes a witness to the divine goodness of God and sees himself as part of His intricate design. No wonder John Muir wrote, "that the hills and the groves were God's first cathedrals." And just maybe, in these ever vanishing outposts of wild landscape, divorced from man’s greed, plots and agendas everything still happens according to God’s divine pleasure. And I, just a mere man, was there to see it.

  • In every walk with Nature one receives far more than he seeks." - John Muir . These words of John Muir couldn't be more true. That especially of when walking through the vast, forsaken land of Kings Canyon National Park. . After climbing Forester Pass, a 13,200 ft. portal separating one world from another, you begin your descend into Kings Canyon. A world unlike other worlds. A place in which you feel dinosaurs should be roaming the land. A place so isolate and so untouched, it's as if, "man shouldn't even be here". As we sat gathered in a circle, nomads amongst a land unseen by most, I couldn't help but ask myself, where am I? So far from home and so emerged in mother nature's beauty. God's Country if you will. The towering cathedrals of the Easter High Sierra encompass you in a canyon filled with life. Rhythmic music of flowing rivers mixed with the song of birds, all gathered around the vibrant ocean of colored flowers blowing in the breeze. You cant help but feel the most utter sense of connection with the land. Everything is flowing from one place to another, all serving a purpose. A purpose to sustain life. . John Muir had it right. I sought out to see some of America's most natural beauty. But what I received was far more greater. A lesson, a lesson on life and the appreciation for life. For just how everything is in a constant flow, and the beauty of life is in the palm of your hands.. . #PacificCrestTrail #KingsCanyon #NationalPark #ForesterPass #thetrek #pct2018 #thruhike #nobo #trekthepct #JohnMuirTrail #jmt #hikertrash #thruhiker #nomad #freetraveler #getoutsideitsfree #myhappyplace #nature #photography #mountains #backpacking #pctig #pcta #MissYaFam #TheBoys #OptOutside #LiveLife #LoveLife #BestDaysOfMyLife #CollectMemoriesNotThings

  • Then my mind slowly drifted away . JMT DAY 13 - MILKY WAY OVER SALLIE KEYS LAKES . Milky Way over Sallie Keys Lakes . Once the moon was set over the ridge, the Milky Way was clearly visible although the sky near the horizon was still quite illuminated by the sunken moon. And Mars, still relatively close to Earth (closest to Earth was 44 million miles away a couple of months ago), looked brighter. . Or I was being tricked by my eyes. . The ridge backlit by the moon slowly got darkened as the illumination of the sky faded. More stars started coming out, and soon the heavenly body was strewn with thousands of them. . The wind was persistent throughout the night, but when it died down momentarily, it felt like as if everything stood still. The lake was so calm that I was able to make out almost every star scattered across the water. . Then my mind slowly drifted away. . Since we started, we had climbed over 4 passes, and now 5 more passes (Muir, Mather, Pinchot, Glen and Forester) to go before Trail Crest. Oh, and extra 2 more passes (Bishop and Kearsarge) to climb over to pick up resupplies. . But, what I didn’t know then was that, except for Glen Pass, which I had climbed before, the 4 of them (Island, Donohue, Silver and Selden) had been relatively easy, compared to what was ahead of us. . • What pack would I bring on a 12-day high-alpine thruhike with no resupplies and a mandatory bear canister? — simple. — few packs will perform as admirably under those conditions as my trusted ULA Circuit — it is still lifting strong after hundreds upon hundreds of miles hiking/scambling in the High Sierra over the past several summers — whatever it has lost cosmetically it has gained in sentimental value

  • I need to pause the landscape photos to give a shout-out to the wonderful humans I encountered while hiking the John Muir Trail. These people became my trail family, often showing up the moment I needed to see a friendly face: . Pete gave me a pink lemonade energy chew during a moment of grumpiness. Lindsey and I shared lunch and laughed at what we brought on trail that made us happy: I brought two cameras & a coloring book, she brought binoculars and a 16oz glass bottle of olive oil...but no tent and no cooking stove. I played leap frog with Moses & Sarka for a week and Sputnik ran into me almost every morning at the exact time that I was taking a pee break. I took the first group picture for Dan, Brie, Grizz & Squirrel and we ended up finishing the last 4 days together, with Dan & Brie getting engaged on top of Whitney. After summiting Whitney, we crammed 9 people into Kern’s van and gave everyone a ride into Lone Pine. What a time! #hiking #johnmuirtrail #jmt #california
