  • This almost surreal painting appeared on the cover of a book I still treasure: 'The Essential Mystics' by Andrew Harvey which I bought in 1996. 'St Jerome in a Rocky Landscape' by Joachim Patenir 1515. Oil on oak panel, 36cm x 33cm. Patinir was one of the first artists to be described as a "landscape painter," and his friend Albrect Dürer used this term in connection with Patinir's pictures. Depth is beautifully suggested by the use of blues in the background (atmospheric perspective). This technique would be taken up in the 16th century by painters such as Paul Bril, and later would be introduced into Italy. Frequently the foregrounds are painted in brown tones with the backgrounds in blues and greens. Saint Jerome is, along with Saint Gregory the Great, Saint Augustine, and Saint Ambrose, one of the four doctors of the Church. He was born around 340 and was educated in Rome under the tutelage of the famous grammarian Donatus. After being baptized, he undertook a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He then retired into the desert in Syria to pay penitence and to live as a hermit. Upon returning to Rome in 382, he was commissioned by Pope Damasus to translate the Bible from the original Hebrew and Greek into Latin (the Vulgate). The translation was completed in Palestine, where the saint retired after the death of the pope. He died in 420. He is the patron saint of theologians and scholars. The painting shows Saint Jerome sheltering under a makeshift hut helping a lion during his retreat in the desert. The painting is at The National Gallery in London.

The 16th century witnessed a new era for painting in Germany and the Netherlands that combined influences from local traditions and foreign influences. Many artists, including Patinier, traveled to Italy to study and these travels to the south provided new ideas, particular concerning representations of the natural world. Patinier's religious subjects, therefore, incorporate precise observation and naturalism with fantastic landscapes inspired by the northern traditions of Bosch

  • This Saint Jerome in a Rocky Landscape is an oil on oak panel painting by the Flemish painter Joachim Patinir, dated to 1524. Joachim Patinir, also called Patenier, was a Flemish Renaissance painter of history and landscapesubjects. He was Flemish, from the area of modern Wallonia, but worked in Antwerp, then the centre of the art market in the Low Countries. Patinir was a pioneer of landscape as an independent genre and he was the first Flemish painter to regard himself primarily as a landscape painter. He effectively invented the "world landscape", a distinct style of panoramic northern Renaissance landscapes which is Patinir's important contribution to Western art. #europeanoldmasters #oldmasters #joachimpatinir #nationalgallery @national_gallery

  • All over the map. Landscapes - pictures of the country - in early modern Europe. These are places for cultivation, dalliance, revelation and terror. For journeys. The settings for people’s experiences and endeavours. The harvesting of a wheat field, going properly to church, the safe trudge along a rutted road. These activities can have wild borders: unclimbable crags, a viciously jagged bough that’s the reminder of the storm that brought it down, the wood near Athens full of illicit sex and nasty infantile voyeurism, of satyrs, bears and forest fires. Nature can be beautiful but it’s never purely so. We need to tame it to escape its dangers - and they’re as present in many of these pictures as the figure of death lurking behind a beautiful maiden. We see all this because in the maze of galleries that makes up the Met’s suite for European paintings - always somehow uncharted territory - something remarkable has happened. Half the rooms are currently closed so their skylights can be renewed and, by compressing and rearranging, not abandoning chronology but putting more emphasis on exploratory themes, a new geography for picturing has been mapped by @keith.christiansen and his brilliant colleagues. This too has smooth roads, some rougher tracks and even, sometimes, a thrilling sense of off-road danger. The cluster of smallish rooms has become a useful tool, with every one of them framing a surprise, a chance to re-see. I hope this approach survives when the curators have more space again. It tells us more than an arrangement purely by place ever can. I loved realizing that Rubens had put himself right in the middle of his dark wood, making its paint, its obscurities and illuminations, into a battle between talented man and frightening nature. And I only did so because of the shock of its juxtaposition with paintings from north and south. 1. #janbreugheltheelder Antwerp/Brussels 1607 2. #pieterbruegeltheelder Brussels 1565 3. #pieterdemolijn Haarlem 1629 4. #peterpaulrubens Antwerp ca.1635 5. #joachimpatinir Antwerp 1512-15 6. #pierodicosimo Florence ca.1495 7. #moretto Brescia 1515-20 8. #dossodossi Ferrara 1520s-30s. • 💫 One more doctor 🎨 "Landscape with Saint Jerome" (1516 - 1517) by Joachim Patinir (1480-1524). Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid, Spain. 📃 . #JoachimPatinir shows St Jerome sitting inside the wooden shack that leans against the rocks in the foreground. As with the Landscape with the Martyrdom of St Catherine in Vienna (Kunsthistorisches Museum), the painter here raises the line of the horizon, leading to an increase in the space devoted to the landscape and the consequent reduction of the sky (although this has been cut down still further, it should be recalled, by the disappearance of the curved upper portion of the picture). Patinir may have taken his inspiration for the features of the landscape from Namur, since the bare outcrops of jagged rock are reminiscent of that region. The position occupied by the saint on the left of the panel, together with the rocky outcrops, make this the most dynamically balanced of the painter`s works. It is divided into two parts. On the left and in the foreground to the right is the solitude of nature, representative of the desert to which St Jerome has retired. Further towards the background in the centre and on the right is everyday, earthly activity. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

#patinir #joachimpatinir #museodelprado #prado #arthistory #historiadelarte #arte #art
