Manuel Jalón Corominas, a aeronautical engineer, has been a revolutionary influence in medicine. He brought the disposable syringe to Spain in 1973. He also brought us to our feet and off our knees with the invention of the mop. What might seem like a simple design actually had a great social impact. Allowing those who previously scrubbed floors on their knees the dignity to stand. #stand#mop#inventions#greatness#advancementsinmedicine
“client facing” - many of you want the ‘behind the scenes’. If you’re on travel for business then you’re most likely a client facing professional (you might also face a window or a laptop screen…) you’re either a sales guy or a client service guy. Maybe your title is CEO, Head of Product, Head of Analytics, Head of Digital, CMO, Analyst, Legal Counsel, CTO, Consultant, Adviser, Lead Engineer, Regional Director,…I mean who really cares about the title, your client doesn’t care, he knows titles are BS. Titles just inform your client whether you have an official capacity of signatory or whether you’re a representative, a messenger. Anyway, everyone knows that you flew in to sell something - the face-to-face is your way of making sh!t happen. It’s a vital medium to secure your business and, hopefully, you’ll successfully close many more opportunities. In the old days, you were called the closer, the rainmaker. These words aren’t industry friendly anymore. Maybe you’re a ‘strategist’, a ‘specialist’, a ‘marketer’ with an interesting background, such as a PhD or maybe you were an artist. You’re a sales guy. It took me years to make peace with this fact. I thought I was a scientist, the man you call to solve big problems. Anyway, now that you’ve had your one hour of face time with your client. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a chance to take your clients out for lunch or dinner…that’s how you really build relationships. By now, you killed 4 hours of the day, what else can you do? If your business is doing well and if you’re a senior pillar of your firm, you’ll go to fancy hotels and dine wherever you want…Okay, you spent an hour by the beach and an hour at the gym, then what? Well, it’s likely that you’d be in your hotel room, sat at a desk, writing report, follow-ups, you’d respond to your never ending emails, jump on a video call. You’ll order room service, you’ll likely eat alone. Maybe you have a sea view, maybe you’re catching up on Netflix. That’s the life on the road. And I didn’t mention the jet lag, the temperature change, the delays, the noise level in the plane, being away from your loved ones. That’s the life we choose, and I love it. #ontheroad
