This past May, I had my best ever bobcat encounter. I spent almost every weekend hiking, looking for these cats in hopes of seeing them with their young kittens that were born a few weeks earlier. Seeing bobcat kittens is always rare, but seeing kittens this young is even rarer because mom hides them very well. I knew luck would have to be on my side to have an encounter with kittens this young.
Thankfully, the luck was on my side. One evening, while hiking I spotted a female bobcat on the trail. I watched the cat disappear into the brush around an old abandoned building. About ten minutes later, I looked up at a window on the building, only to see the female bobcat looking back down at me. As I raised the camera and looked in the viewfinder, I realized she was not alone: she had her three young kittens with her.
I was thrilled to see these kittens out in a "frame". After taking pictures for several minutes, the mom and one of the kittens disappeared back into the building, but two kittens remained on the windowsill for quite a while longer.
Needless to say, I haven't had a better encounter since then. I am looking forward to searching for more young kittens next spring.
