“Mom, I promise to come back to you when you call me if you let me off my leash to chase my friend Winnie and play in the water!” Arlo and I have been a bit frustrated with each other lately. I can tell he wants more freedom and it breaks my heart to see him leashed while he watches other dogs chase balls and run off their energy. He has been terrific in training situations with his recall. Perfect most times. We have tested leash dropping hiking in areas where he is confined, we’ve dropped his leash for photos, we’ve done a billion sit, stay, come’s at home and in situations with distractions, we have taken him to fenced areas to practice and he has always listened. He doesn’t listen, however, when he is highly stimulated. I lose his focus quickly then. This is why I am so terrified to even try letting him off leash. I am so terrified he won’t come back. That something terrible will happen to him as a result of me not being responsible enough to keep him safe. Yesterday we did a huge loop trail that took us along the inside of a bay and out to beach with a long jetty. We were four miles from anything at this point - there were no cars, no roads, no people - just us and Arlo’s bff Winnie. Thinking back it would have been a perfect place to practice off leash - he was a bit tired out, focused and over his initial stimulation of being on a walk. I know he would have loved chasing her up and down the beach I could see in his eyes he was frustrated he couldn’t. Our walk out he seemed deflated and honestly, I was too. Am I holding him back? I wonder? When do I give him a chance to let me trust him? Ever since the day he jumped the fence, locked eyes with me and ran the opposite direction when called, I am just absolutely terrified. Also - how about a sunny 60 degree day on the coast in mid January? I LOVE OREGON! — Picture shared by our friend @laducb

This is Arlo. He’s my sidekick (actually, I’m probably his sidekick if we’re being honest), my shotgun rider (ask any one who has ever tried to sit in the passenger seat of my car when he’s in tow) and he never has other plans when I want to go on an adventure. He’s perfect. and I instruct all of my dog-sitter friends to remind him of that “at least four times a visit.” Because, look at him.

Today is the first day in 5 years I have missed a paycheck, due to the government shut down. I have truly loved lacing up my boots every morning. My Coast Guard career has allowed me to save lives during search and rescue operations, protect Americans as a military police officer, as well as assist in the aid of others through my qualification as an EMT. This week is a little different. Listening to those I work with and seeing posts on Facebook and Instagram talking about going to food pantries and not sure how the bills are going to be met is hard. Listening to some of the strongest people I know talk about financial struggles due to elected officials not being able to come to a decision sucks. I ask that you keep my shipmates in mind and pray or send some positive thoughts our way during these hard times. PC @vrmr_yeti
