  • This depiction of the Virgin and Child, painted by Joos van Cleve and a collaborator c. 1525, portrays the Christ child sleeping in his mother’s arms, a pose which is traditionally considered a prefiguration of his death. The Christ child holds an apple, symbolizing his position as the redeemer of man’s sins, while the Virgin holds an illuminated prayer book in which lines from the Gospel of Saint Luke and De Profundis are legible. Episodes from the early life of Christ are depicted in the detailed landscape of the background, including the Flight into Egypt and the Massacre of the Innocents.

“Rencontre de maîtres” has become an annual event during which you have the opportunity to discover outstanding works from our collection. #Brueghel features in the exhibition with a Wedding Dance, a Village Street and an Autumn scene. With wintry weather in the air, we can also warm ourselves in front of the fire, just like these jolly peasants. As for #Bison, he brings to life the golden age of Venice with a selection of gouaches, while Abraham #Janssens celebrates the seasons with an astonishing series of four panels. The moderns are just as present with an imposing bronze by #Pomodoro and a sensitive work by #Schifano. And once again, #Fontana is in the spotlight alongside #Magritte.

Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam. The exact year of the painting's completion is unknown, the Rijksmuseum estimates it as circa 1658. The painting portraits a "milkmaid", in fact, a domestic kitchen maid, and it is regarded as one of the best paintings of the artist. The housemaid is in a plain room carefully pouring milk into a squat earthenware container (now commonly known as a "Dutch oven") on a table. Also on the table are various types of bread. She is a young, sturdily built woman wearing a crisp linen cap, a blue apron and work sleeves pushed up from thick forearms. A foot warmer is on the floor behind her, near Delft wall tiles depicting Cupid (to the viewer's left) and a figure with a pole (to the right). Intense light streams from the window on the left side of the canvas. The painting is strikingly illusionistic, conveying not just details but a sense of the weight of the woman and the table. The light, though bright, doesn't wash out the rough texture of the bread crusts or flatten the volumes of the maid's thick waist and rounded shoulders. Yet with half of the woman's face in shadow, it is impossible to tell whether her downcast eyes and pursed lips express wistfulness or concentration, a bit of a Mona Lisa effect in modern viewers. She is going about her daily task, faintly smiling and our reaction is 'What is she thinking?'". 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀🏛 Share our Wonderful Heritage 🏛 🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹🔸🔹 #art #europeanart #artists #artwork🎨 #flemish #selfpotrait #portraitpainting #flanders #vermeer #girlwithapearlearring #artiste #kunst #flemishart #rotterdam #flemishgiant #arthistory #holland #museum #hollanda #nederlands #netherlands #netherland #olanda #johannesvermeer #nederland #dutchart #dutch

  • The Sunflowers. Today was a warm sunny winter day in Delhi. It is the only time here, when we enjoy the sun shining down on us. So it is only pertinent to share images of sunflowers rendered by various artists over the time. Sunflowers got immortalized in the art world by the series painted by Vincent van Gogh. Apart from paintings in this collection of sunflowers, I have also included a sketch along with poetry by Walter Crane from his collection of Flora's feast (a collection of personified flowers) and a beautiful art nouveau vase by Rene Lalique (this is just one of his many pieces with sunflower theme). Then I have included the PAG artist, K H Ara's still life, followed by Edward Jean Steichen's very abstract depiction of the subject marking his preoccupation with golden rules of geometry. Then there is the black and white woodcut by M C Escher. This is followed by the long stemmed dainty sunflower plants by Benode Behari Mukherjee. Then comes an unexpected rendition by Klimt which has the quintessential glitter effect of any Klimt canvas. Next in line one of the many sunflowers attempted by the post impressionist artist Henry Matisse. And for the last artwork, I have picked the oldest in this series, a self portrait painted by the Flemish baroque artist Anthony Van Dyck in 1632-33. The sunflower never ceases to dazzle on us with it's brilliance and warmth. #sunflower #yellow #vangogh #vincentvangogh #waltercrane #poetry #florasfeast #renelalique #lalique #vase #artnouveau #khara #ara #mcescher #blackandwhite #steichen #letournesol #edwardsteichen #geometry #abstract #expressionism #impressionism #benodebeharimukherjee #gustavklimt #henrimatisse #Matisse #AnthonyVandyck #flemishart #baroque #oneinspirationmanyinterpretation

#domenicoghirlandaio #michelangelo #frescoes #benozzogozzoli #pinturicchio #carpaccio #masaccio #vandergoes #renaissance #flemishart #novelization #perspective #berenson #robertolonghi #zeri #art #arthistory

#artealdettaglio #vaneyck # #janvaneyck #scuolafiamminga #pitturafiamminga #coniugiarnolfini #bruges #nationalgallery #arnolfini #arnolfiniportrait #specchio #specchioriflesso #dettaglioperfetto #details #mirror #art #arte #1430 #flemishart #flemish #flemishartist #portrait #capolavoro

  • The pendant to Hans Memling’s portrait of Maria Portinari (see previous post), this panel was painted c. 1470. Portinari began working at the Bruges branch of the Medici bank around 1440, and he became one of the wealthiest citizens in Bruges and a close confidant of both Philip the Good and his son Charles the Bold. It was Portinari’s substantial loans of Charles the Bold, many of which were never repaid, that led to the demise of the Medici bank.

  • Magdalen Reading(1435-1438) [National Gallery, London, UK] Rogier van der Weyden (Flemish, 1399/40 - 1464) "Magdalen Reading”is one of three surviving fragments of a large oil-on-panel altarpiece by the Early Netherlandish painter Rogier van der Weyden. The panel, originally oak, was completed some time between 1435 and 1438 and has been in the National Gallery, London since 1860. It shows a woman with the pale skin, high cheek bones and oval eyelids typical of the idealised portraits of noble women of the period. She is identifiable as the Magdalen from the jar of ointment placed in the foreground, which is her traditional attribute in Christian art. She is presented as completely absorbed in her reading, a model of the contemplative life, repentant and absolved of past sins. In Catholic tradition the Magdalen was conflated with both Mary of Bethany who anointed the feet of Jesus with oil and the unnamed "sinner" of Luke 7:36–50. Iconography of the Magdalen commonly shows her with a book, in a moment of reflection, in tears, or with eyes averted. #magdalen #magdalenreading #rogiervanderweyden #vanderweyden #nationalgallery #nationalgalleryofart #flemishart #flemishartist #religiousart #christianart
