NIP QUAD TENDINITIS IN THE BUD
Being proactive rather than reactive is key when it comes to injuries. A lot of people tend to ignore aches and pains and continue training on top of it in hopes that it will one day “resolve itself”, and continue to expose themselves to the painful stimuli without any modification to their training due to fear of skipping on the main lifts (squat, deadlift, snatch, cleans).
Nothing will happen if you take a week or two off the barbell, or if you modify your training around the injury to avoid painful movement patterns. In fact, take that as a time to work on correcting or improving other areas. Each crisis is an opportunity in disguise! Here are my main recommendations for dealing with knee pain:
1. Box squats: this is probably my favorite alternative, you’ll almost always be able to find a box height that doesn’t aggravate your knee. Squatting to a box will allow you to stay on track without the negatives of making your injury worst as long as you can tolerate it.
2. If that doesn’t work. Reduce the volume: sometimes our tissues need time to heal and recover from successive training sessions. Reduce your volume by either cutting the reps, intensity or frequency.
3. Incorporate soft tissue mobilizations as well as activation exercises: in this video I’m using a Voodoo floss band with a banded TKE to act as a form of “active release technique” to reduce the tone of the quads and alleviate some tension in the quad tendon.
4. Corrective exercises: make sure you identify and correct the movement impairment that is leading to the disfunction or if you don’t know where to start visit a PT!
