  • I very rarely add new additions to my little zoo, but this little one made my self control fly out the window. I’d like to introduce Azrael the male 2018 silver blonde Suboc/Trans-Pecos Ratsnake, bred by VMS Herpetological. :) He’s a fantastic feeder and even at this age has the typical suboc wonderful easygoing disposition. I’m head over heels already!

  • Ah.. 1 of 4 of my large mangrove cat-snakes. Not a happy camper... rear-fanged venomous colubrids and full of defensive attitude. The snakes in the Boiga genus have very complex components in their venom. Some species like The green cat snake, this species, the dog toothed cat snake, the brown cat snake and the black headed cat snake have extremely potent venom, we’re talking death-adder level. However their delivery system is just.. so poor.. that only a tiny bit of that comes out and mixed with their saliva. A bite could be dry.. since they need to chew or hold on for a few seconds for that rear-fang to get a good hold. This is not a problem for some rear fanged species like the boomslang with larger fangs placed closer to the front of their mouths. Boiga - studied to an extent.. has what is called a Denmotoxin, and it works very effective by birds and snakes. By mice it’s 100 times less effective. These snakes can bite a large bird or snake and kill it within a minute or less. But a mouse bitten could sometimes just walk it off. Could be another factor why we are less affected. But that’d venom for you, i’m no expert and it is an extremely complex subject that runs far too deep for what i’m into, fascinating though.. ahh forgot to add symptoms from them, so perhaps you got bit and the snake held on for 3+ seconds.. you could get light-headed and dizzy.. nausea. You’re definitely going to feel a burning sensation, get huge muscle cramps along your joints. Aches and pains, the urge to throw up, itchiness and a lot of swelling, in severe bites people have blacked out and developed some dead flesh at the bite site. No confirmed deaths i believe. The symptoms go away within a few hours to days or weeks to a month depending on severity.

  • My beautiful African house snake. I love how iridescent she is. She is eating like a champ and finally getting some weight on her. I just don’t know what it is, but she intimidates the heck out of me 😳.She is my very first colubrid and her body language seems hard to read, unlike a ball. But I’ll get use to her soon enough. . . .

  • I don't typically put my retired breeders down for brumation. I certainly wouldn't want this girl to cycle and even lay slugs. She previously had to get an oviduct removed. I'm not certain exactly how old she is but I got her as an adult about 5 years ago. She's a great animal and is anerythyrstic and heterozygous for at least amel.
