They don’t make buildings (architecture, design, craftsmanship, love) the way they use to. When I get to experience a historical building like the Rookery here in Chicago, I like to take it all in. The people who handcrafted these buildings inspire me with my own art. Seeing their finished product reminds me that patients and time typically are key factors to doing something right #whpinspiredby@instagram . .

View so pretty it [almost] makes you forget how cold it actually is! Head over to North Avenue Beach for this beautiful view. The Lakefront trail passes right by it, so it’s great for walking, running, or biking around there. | 📍North Avenue Beach
If you live 37 (or more) degrees north of the Equator, you experience such little sunlight that your body can't produce adequate vitamin D. That includes anyone north of Atlanta! This isn’t necessarily a bad thing- the American Academy of Dermatology recommends against getting vitamin D from sun exposure given the risk of skin cancer.
What is vitamin D?
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that naturally occurs in few foods. Humans create their own vitamin D when UV rays hit the skin and trigger the process. Once vitamin D is in our system, whether via the sun or food, it undergoes steps to be transformed into its active form. The liver takes vitamin D and turns it into calcidiol, or 25-hydroxyvitamin D. Then, the kidneys convert calcidiol into calcitriol, or 1,25di-hydroxyvitamin D.
Vitamin D supplements can be found in the calcidiol or calcitriol form. Consult with your physician before taking any supplement, as they’ll be able to determine if it is necessary & give a specific recommendation that would work best for you!
As for food, vitamin D is scarce. You’ll find it in fatty fish such as cod & salmon. Small amounts are found in egg yolks. Most of our dietary vitamin D comes from fortified foods, such as dairy products & orange juice. 🍳🧀🥚🥛🍣
How much vitamin D do I need?
The 3rd picture shows the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for vitamin D, a value that will meet the needs of 97% of the specified group.
Why do I need vitamin D?
Vitamin D helps our guts absorb calcium, both essential for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth. We also use it to regulate our immune and neuromuscular functions! 🦷🦴
The Bottom Line
Those of us north of Atlanta are at increased risk of vitamin D deficiency due to the minimal sun exposure we experience. Regardless, the AAD has determined that the risks of sun exposure outweigh the benefits of vitamin D from the sun. So, we’re left to food & supplements to meet the RDA. 🌞
The simplicity of the facade of this two-flat in West Ridge is what drew me into it the most. The absence of decoration allows the eye to more easily see the building’s smooth curve and detailed brickwork📻
Came back to a snowed Chicago. Pictured here is Agora, an installation of 106 headless iron sculptures. Figures are 9ft tall and weigh 1,800 lb. To fully take in the work of art, visitors are encouraged to walk through the sculptures and contemplate the work. | 📍Grant Park
