  • I come here often, it’s a short drive from home. A place I can rest my mind, like staring into a fire. I watch the silky water roll before breaking over the edge, and the swallows chasing each other. The river is born on the glaciers of a volcano, rushing down the moraines, gaining volume on it’s journey into the contrasting desert.

  • "In Zen, there is an old saying - The obstacle is the path. Know that a whole and happy life is not free of obstacles. Quite the contrary, a whole and happy life is riddled with obstacles - they simply become the very stepping stones that help lift us to a new perspective. It is not what happens to us in this life that shapes us, it is how we choose to respond to what happens to us." ❦

  • Wintery reflections || I saw these Reeds and I thought there has to be a composition here for perhaps a lovely b&w image. I feel it turned out fairly nice with the very ethereal looking reeds bending to the left, combined with the reflections of the snowy landscape and the curvy lines in the sand under the water //

  • Last January, Robin and I explored Oregon! We covered everywhere from Portland to Mount Hood to the rugged coasts of Bandon. I think Oregon is probably the most underrated state on the West Coast. They have wine regions, sand dunes, mountains, ski hills, hiking trails, a great food scene, tons of craft breweries, small fishing villages, even painted hills like you find in Peru! Plus, lots of American history (Oregon Trial, anyone?) Find my massive travel guide for exploring Oregon during the winter on today's Stories, or search for it on whimsysoul.com! #travelbackthursday #traveloregon @traveloregon

  • A lovely hike to observe the mighty Columbia River. Avoid being blinded by the sun’s intense reflection off the river in the late afternoon, and instead bring a head lamp so you can stay for the sunset and still make it down safe (something I wish we would have done!) 🌅 😎

  • White Storm. A fresh coat of snow over the incredible landscape of the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument in Northern Arizona. This is a popular rock formation of the area that caught my eye and really reminded me of the spiral pattern that weather systems have when viewing from above with a satellite. We got here the night before just as it started snowing so I got a little feel for the area beforehand as well. Easily one of the most unique and captivating landscapes I’ve ever visited. With about 2 inches of snow on the ground it did seem to lose a little bit of its character but I felt fortunate to see it in that light and also have the whole place to myself before it got trampled with footprints. I’ll definitely be making a return visit in the future. ----------------------------------------------- Visit my website to purchase a print of this photo and for info on private instruction and group workshops! ----------------------------------------------- Shot Info: - Canon 5DIV, Canon 16-35mm 2.8L III, @indurotripods Stealth CLT404 - ISO100, 16mm, F11, 1.6s - Shot in RAW, processed with Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop

  • Mary Oliver, how impossibly resistant my fingers are to string past tense words together for you. A transcendant voice, gone. How many times have you scooped me out of rock bottom to focus on the granular details of nature? The relationship of all things? To breathe life into the ordinary and seemingly mundane. You would tell me to get curious. To use my body with courage. To be amazed. Every day. . So today I’ll sit, and I’ll write, and I’ll take the time to watch snowflakes float to their final resting spot, blanketing the trees in a comforting fortress. Like painting the walls at home pure white for the few creatures that stick around through the winter apocalypse . Thank you, Mary 😭 . You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about your despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the world goes on. Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers. Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again. Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -- over and over announcing your place in the family of things. "Wild Geese", Mary Oliver

  • Found some old shots from the first time I went hiking with my camera to Lake Boardman with @sammi.conaway. Been way too long since I’ve been up here and now that I’ve learned a couple more things, I’d say it’s safe to bring my SL1 back and see what kind of different shots we can get.
