  • WHY YOU SHOULD LIFT WITH YOUR LEGS by @dr.jacob.harden You've all heard that you should lift with your legs and not your back. But I feel like no one ever explains why?😞 So I had some 🎬 editing fun with this video from my buddy @jake.price.dc out in Houston. . You see, it all comes down to physics.📐 You have this thing called a "moment arm". This is the shortest distance from the axis of rotation (hip joint here) and the line of force from whatever your lifting. A longer moment arm means the weight is relatively heavier and more strenuous to lift because the load is further away. Shorter is the opposite. . To understand better hold a ⛃10 pound weight by your side and then extend your arm fully. You'll find the latter to be heavier because the weight is further away. . ❌So when you keep the load far away, it's harder to lift, more stress on your back, and harder to keep a stable spinal position. Not good! . ✅Instead, get the load as close as possible, get tight and stable, and lift from there. That may have you squatting it up like the video or doing more of a deadlift motion. Either way, you want that weight as close as possible. . Share this with a friend and let's spread the word on better lifting mechanics.   • Side plank doesn’t have to be hard on the wrists. There are so many other variations and ways to strengthen the core and muscles along the sides of the body to stabilise my lumbar curve to prevent it from getting worse. An asymmetric body needs an asymmetrical approach so I do this longer on the convex side of the lumbar curve. It’s generally my weaker side with less stability in the hips as well!

  • Pilates is very different to your average workout. Every movement needs to be carried out with precise technique; incorporating the 6 key principles of Pilates. 1. Centering - All movements originate from the core. Think about how you use your core to carry out each movenent. 2. Control - Controlled movements ensure you use the correct muscles. 3. Concentration - Concentrate on the movement to ensure correct positioning and engagement of your core. 4. Precision - Be precise. The goal is to do the movement properly and not just to complete it. 5. Breathing - Breathe with every movement. Some of the benefits to breathing include: activation of deep core muscles, oxygenated blood running through the body and stress-release. 6. Flow - Pilates movements need to be done with flow and grace. This helps to connect all the body parts together. Some dancers do this so well, you should see how @gretadanceandfitness glides through the air, just as Joseph Pilates would expect!

  • How’s your back feeling today? Try this spinal mobility sequence. Start with a standing roll down /up, feet hip distance apart. Roll down slowly to your comfort keeping knees soft or more bent if hamstrings are tight. Then add a half roll down into spinal extension. Add a thread through reaching to the side as in the video. Our spine requires flexion/extension and rotational movement. Your hamstrings will thank you too, getting a good stretch! ☯️ do not attempt if you have a spinal condition such as osteoporosis. Speak to your physician/ physio to check what suits you if unsure.   • Stoked that I’ve finally purchased the Salli sit happy ergonomic multi-functional chair today 😍 Good posture for great back & spine health can’t be underestimated, especially when most of us spend hours on a chair. Sitting on a Salli chair actually strengthens the core muscles (which is the aim of exercises like pilates) but, without feeling the effort of exercising 😅 Salli’s saddle chair also corrects ones’ sitting posture, and has been reported to relieve backaches & help with some back and spine conditions over a longer period. I have been on the look out for a good ergonomic chair for quite some time to prevent backache from prolonged sitting. People use the Salli chair for anything from homes to offices and clinics. (I see that it’s popular among dentists who often suffer backaches - in fact, I happen to bump into a couple of dentists in this Salli office today who swore by it too 😅) A disadvantage though, is that with saddle seating, ladies cannot wear above-knee-length skirts and sit on it. Another disadvantage is that you may need a higher table or to stack your computer on books to raise the table height. Advantages: -strengthens core muscles without effort 👍 (it’s awesome that while I am seated, I’m working out my core muscles effortlessly 😅) -corrects sitting posture -lessens backache -for males, the open gap in Salli’s saddle seating reduces genital temperatures by around 4 degrees Celsius, which is better for reproductive health & hygiene -Salli sway has a 5-year warranty; regular Salli has a 2-year warranty. I am glad that Salli has been made more affordable in the recent years from its original $2000 price tag (!! 😱) to a 3-digit sum in Singapore from this polite boss of Eastland Dental Supplies called Richard who gave me a slight further discount when I bought my Salli sway from him today. Thank you @louisalee & Dr @wengcheu of @dpdental for recommending this awesome chair to me!😊 ps.   • I think it’s about time to introduce myself. I opened this account sometime ago but I didn’t start sharing up until a month or so and it has grown fairly fast, especially in the past couple of weeks. Clearly this is a Zyia Rep account, which is an active/ everyday wear, but there is an actual person behind all this. Here is a bit more about me . 💫I’m a wife and mother of two amazing little girls 6 and 4 years old . 💫I like to think of myself as “fitish” which means, I equally like fitness and ice cream 😁 . 💫I enjoy fitness and I workout almost daily, mostly because my body asks for movement. I don’t obsessed about it . 💫Often I spend all day wearing the same outfit. So, I am a fan of cute and comfortable clothing, especially those fitness outfits that transition well from the gym/studio to the street . 💫After living most of my life in a tropical jewel, I now basically live in a freezer . 💫I joined the Zyia Active team mainly because I really like their clothing and I wouldn’t mind to share the word among family and friends . 💫My ideal day includes a blue calm beach, a refreshing drink and a good book.
