  • These two mares spent about 20 minutes trying to get an apple and a can of chips out of this canvas bag. But because it was zipped closed, the horses did not get the reward they were looking for and moved on. When planning to visit the beach, if you can't leave food in your vehicle, make sure you put it in a zipped tote or a hard sided container that locks or can be strapped shut with a luggage strap. If the horses approach your spot, grab your storage bags and containers and move away. If a horse happens to beat you to your stored food, do not attempt to take it from the horse; they are very agresive when on "food raids" and will bite and kick. ******************************************** #assateaguenps #assateague #assateagueisland #horses #beach #properly #store #food #properlystoreyourfood

  • Did you know that red fox can be found on Assateague Island? They can be found in all habitats on the island where they hunt for rodent, rabbits, birds, amphibians and even fruit. If the opportunity presents itself, they will also partake of any carcasses they find. • These mysterious critters have been washing up on Assateague Island for several weeks now. What are they? Believe it or not, these are actually a colony of animals called a blue button. Blue buttons are a colony of hydroids that are typically found in tropical and subtropical waters. Depending on the currents and wind to move, they arrive on Assateague because they get caught up in tropical storm activity that comes up from the south. The center part of blue button is simply a float, while the blue tentacles house the colony of hydroids. If we were to put one of the tentacles under a microscope, we would be able to see the hyrdoids (which look like tiny sea anemones) lining its length. • On August 17, 2018, a pinto #colt was born at @assateaguenps. The new foal and band live most of the year in the very busy developed area and campgrounds. For this reason, the National Park Service expressly reminds visitors that it is essential to remain a minimum of a 40 ft away from the wild horses at all times. About two-thirds of foals in the National Seashore are born in April, May and June, but it is not uncommon for foals to be born during any month of the year. A mare will be very protective of her new #foal and it is vitally important for their well-being that visitors give them, and all of the wild horses, plenty of space. . #findyourpark #nationalparkservice #maryland #assateagueisland #natureupclose #horses

  • Wishing we were still having beautiful, WARM winter days ☀️⁣ ⁣ Being outside in nature and active with my favorite people (especially when it’s warm 😉) is hands down one of the things that brings me the most joy. ✨⁣ ⁣ In the winter we don’t get outside nearly as much (I take full responsibility- I’m a cold weather wimp!) and it stinks. ⁣ ⁣ This winter I’m so grateful that we have at home workouts to do together to get our endorphins going and keep us in a good mood! 🙌⁣ ⁣ #bewithyourpeople #upandoutdoors #assateagueisland #trailwalks #familyadventures

  • Found on old account. Collecting memories here. This was one of the only redeeming qualities my time in MD provided in the solace I would seek. 4 am wake ups, coffee in hand, mangoes 🥭 and rainier cherries 🍒 packed along with seltzer, a beach chair, body board (or surfboard with kids) towel and book 📖 for times that weren’t camping nearby (glad no pictures remain of those). #assateagueisland #assateagueponies #assateagueislandnationalseashore #wildhorses

  • One of my most favorable moments on Assateague Island was the day I found Charmed on her birthday. I had gone kayaking several years ago when I came across this teeny-tiny baby horse with bright white coloring standing beside her mother, Ninka. Mom was still 'dirty' from giving birth, and as far down the island they were I knew I was the first human the baby had seen. Fast forward several years later to this image. I watched the baby grow up into a beautiful wild horse, and now Charmed was pregnant. I couldn't wait to see her baby... Unfortunately the father, Tunkan Hoskilla, was killed in a car accident that year and never saw his son. But Charmed was still with her mother, Ninka. Those two were inseparable. But, the day had finally come for Charmed and out came a little stallion now known as Assateague Phoenix. I couldn't wait to get down to the island and get images of the two of them. And, this is one of those images I made. Tragedy struck the little family again, though, and Charmed met an untimely death about a year later when she was found in some mud and couldn't get out. Now Assateague Phoenix and his grandmother Ninka carry on together, inseparable like she and Charmed once were. But I'll always have images of Charmed on her birth day to remember her by, and images of her son on his birth day. RIP sweet Charmed... #assateagueisland #assateague #wildhorses #wildlife #photography #maryland #gobeyondthebeach #exploreworcester #exploreworcestercounty #seashore #beach #nps #getoutside #getoutdoors #nationalparkgeek #findyourpark #babyanimals #horsesofinstagram

  • I’m not really one of those stand on the sidelines kinds of people. I’m more of a not afraid to get out there and make a difference type. Headed to @assateaguenps this weekend to see how it was holding up during the shutdown. It wasn’t bad, but not great either. I found a lot of small things, like bottle caps, the cool metal deputy badge from @frontiertownoc, some rope and lots of little pieces of plastic. I’ll head back soon with my trusty bucket because I like leaving things nicer than how I found them. ✌️❤️🌊🐴🐢🐬
