This story is happening more & more everyday and I worry more & more about my daughter and her friends as they travel through the city. Enough is enough and I wonder when it'll end. #thehateugive #angiethomas #thuglife #booksireadin2019 📚

  • #janinbooks19 day 14 - ‘Your house is on fire! Pick 3 books to save.’ I’m in the nice position that a lot of my most treasured books live at my parents’ house rather than the house I currently live in, so picking these three wasn’t such a hard decision. I chose I’ll Be Gone in the Dark because it’s my current read. I chose my copy of The Paying Guests as it is a signed limited edition and it’s super pretty. And I went with The Hate U Give as the third because it’s one of my most anticipated future reads. Which would you choose to save?

  • This book is incredible and a much needed voice to be heard in this country. Sadly, today in 2019, racism and police brutality still remain in America, which considers themselves to be the most ‘civilized’ country. Racism is happening on a daily basis against minorities. It is our duty to speak out, to learn, to help one another, and to change this social injustices, even when it is not happening to us personally. . . . “Hustle! Pretend the ball is some fried chicken! Bet you’ll stay on it then.” “I told you guys my grandparents visited, and it was their first time celebrating Thanksgiving, Hailey asked if we ate a cat. Because we’re Chinese.” —————————————— We live in a world when a black person holding a hair brush could be seen as a weapon. But when white people say racist words? Oh, they are just normal words. But we can change that. Swipe to see a few of my favorite quotes from the book. . . . . . #blacklifesmatter #racismisreal #thehateugive #angiethomas #socialinjustice #bookstagram #thehateugivebook #thehateyougivemovie #bestbooksof2018

🙂 #Bookstagram #Instabooks #Instalivre #Thehateugive #rascisme #jeunesse #livres #books #livraddict #angiethomas #nathan

  • The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ . . Starr Carter witnesses a cop shoot her friend Khalil. This story follows her as she decides to testify in front of a grand jury to determine whether the cop in question should face charges. The lower-income neighborhood Starr grew up in is riddled with gang violence but underneath that, people are still people and neighbors still look out for and socialize with each other. I think this book is important because it highlights the humanity of lower-income neighborhoods and the people within it. But it also shows the stranglehold your neighborhood can have on you, as well as things like code switching, being the only one that looks like you in an environment, and the fact that just by being a person of color some people will categorize you as dangerous or criminal. I like the fact that this book almost plays out like a list of topic discussions, and I can definitely understand why this is being read in schools. . . QOTD. What's the last book you read that you could not shut up about, and that you wanted everyone to read? . . #ReadingWomenChallenge No. 24: A YA book by a WOC . #bookreview #whynotya #ya #yareads #TheHateUGive #angiethomas #bookster #discussionpoints #wocauthor #pocreads #januaryreads #winterreads #bookishlove #january2019reads #coffeeandbooks

  • Ok I might be a bit behind. But I lost my book in another state for several months. ❤️this book though! Any easy comprehension read from a youth’s perspective on a micro and macro social issues in today’s world. It delves deeper than just racial tensions and black v blue but analyzes the definitions of family, home, loyalty, as well as co-existence and adaptation. #thehateugive #angiethomas #readinglist #bookstagram #mustread

  • I've recently finished "The Hate U Give" and really liked the story. But reading the german translation brought a bit of a problem with it: the specific language that is used by many characters just seems weird for me when it's translated into German, as if it doesn't fit quite right. Certain ways of talking are hard to translate and that's one of the reasons why I prefer reading the original book in its original language (if I am able to understand it). In this case, the book was a christmas gift that I didn't buy myself. • What do you think about translations?

. . 🇬🇧. . The Hate U Give is the second book I’ve read this year and... it was simply amazing. I had started it last year but, for some reason, got bored of it; now I wonder how that happened, because I read it in one sitting a few days ago. . The book follows Starr, a black teenager who witnesses her best friend’s death in the hands of a cop. This event changes her perception of the world and makes her re think friendships and relationships. On a first glance, the book is about racism, but it deals with so much more. At the end of the day, it’s a (bleak) portrait of American society and the inequality people face every day because their skin is not white enough. I swear, this book is just brilliant. SO, SO RECOMMENDED. . . . ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ . . . . . . #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #thehateugive #angiethomas #racism #elodioquedas #📚

  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Hate U Give was worth the hype. It followed the story of Starr, a young girl who was the sole witness to her best friend's murder. Growing up in an area riddled with drugs and gang violence, unfortunately this isn't the first time her friend was murdered but this time, it was by a police officer. Her friend Khalil was unarmed and 17. The Hate U Give tells a story we hear about all too often on the news and may spark uncomfortable but necessary discussions about modern day racial issues. . . . . Disclaimer, I am a privileged white woman. I grew up in a nice neighborhood. While I have always been supportive of BLM and civil rights, it's not easy to come to terms with understanding your own privilege but it's something we all have to do. The Hate U Give puts a lot of day to day life differences in perspective. Civil rights is much more than the right to vote and ending slavery. Everyone should have the right to feel safe (especially around the police). Everyone should read this story. Yes, it's fiction but it might as well be true because there are hundreds of Khalils who this has happened to (probably more, I'm interested in researching and becoming more involved in advocacy and activism). . . . Discussion question: What can I do to be a better ally for BLM and the African-American community?

  • "Once upon a time there was a hazel-eyed boy with dimples. I called him Khalil. The world called him a thug. He lived, but not nearly long enough, and for the rest of my life I'll remember how he died. Fairy tale? No. But I'm not giving up on a better ending." Do you know how some books have received so much hype and you go into it with high expectations which are disappointingly not met? The opposite of that happened with this book. I'd heard very good things about it but I didn't know quite what to expect. Usually, neither YA books nor realistic fiction are my favourite kinds of stories. I anticipated a very grim, very intense reading experience given the subject matter. And it IS a book which explores the complexities of racism, prejudice, murder, oppression and activism. But what took me by surprise is that the book is also filled with moments of joy and laughter and hope and even fun. It is a serious book but it is not *just* a serious book. And that's what made me fall in love with it. I felt like I was a part of the family and community featured in the book (even though I'm very much an outsider in many different ways). And it did just such a stellar job of introducing me to an unfamiliar culture and diverse perspectives. #youngadult #thehateugive #angiethomas #diversebooks #bookquotes #bookstagram

• • #thehateugive #angiethomas #laveritesurlaffaireharryquebert #joeldicker #lecture #roman

  • 💬 ℚ𝕠𝕥𝕕: What's your most anticipated release of 2019? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This week's prompt for #JointheBookCult is the book publishing this year that you're most looking forward to. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I have to admit that I barely pay attention to when books publish. 😂 There are so many books on my TBR that if something hasn't published yet, I add it to my TBR and figure eventually I'll get back to it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, since joining #bookstagram, I've been reading a lot more ARCs - and therefore have to know when they are publishing to be able to prioritise my reading. This week I'll be sharing the ARCs I'm excited to read with you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Top of the list (it was my first read of the year!) is ON THE COME UP by Angie Thomas. Set in the same neighbourhood as THE HATE U GIVE, her new novel follows Bri - a black girl with music aspirations that keeps having to confront the stereotypes society makes about her. If you liked THUG, then you will enjoy Thomas' new release, publishing on February 7th. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❓Do you pay attention to when books publish? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ CHALLENGES #JaguarSushi2019 | You're gonna love me #BookNerdsJan19 | Black & white #BiblioWivesJan19 | Inspiring characters

  • This is a story of a brave teenager who faces the reality of a harsh world and digs deep to do the right thing. Racism, injustice and strength of character are all themes that are explored, and Starr’s voice is honest and beautiful. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in reading about racial tensions in the USA. 👍🏻❤️2/45 #readingchallenge2019 #angiethomas #thehateugive

  • #thehateugive by Angie Thomas "Sometimes you can do everything right and things will still go wrong. The key is to never stop doing right."- Angie Thomas Starr Carter lives in two worlds - the poor , mostly black neighborhood where she lives and wealthy mostly white peeps school that she attends. She has a good balance between these worlds and is leading a simple happy teenage life. This shatters when she is the only witness of shooting of her unarmed childhood bestie Khalil by a white cop. Now things really turn stormy when Starr a simple, minding-her- own-business girl protests and asks justice for her friend which not just would risk her life but her entire community will be at stake. A pretty much serious issue about discrimination and racism put forward in such a subtle and simple way by Angie Thomas really clicked with me. He dad and mom , brothers, her Uncle Carlos who himself was a cop, her friends from school her boyfriend all was put forth so normally that it felt at home and anyone who reads it can connect with it. Her fight for Khalil's justice by being witness infront of cops, media and finally court with her friends and family's support mashed up with her routine -school life , parents bickering being strict and cool at same time her fight with siblings, boyfriend issues everything is written so simply and beautifully that I felt I was with Starr all the time. I enjoyed my sunday afternoon with this classic and a tasty cup of tea 🎈. Hope you guys enjoy too.🎆 Until next time!!!
