  • Ever wondered if it was possible to open the airplane door in flight? In short, absolutely not. The force applied on the doors of the airplane by the pressurization are about 5 pounds per square inch. How big is the average airliner door ? About 2400 square inch. Pushing it against the pressurization would require a force of about 12000 pounds. The equivalent of an Elephant. So if you ever have Hulk on your flight consider it possible. Unless.... The airplane is de pressurized and on the ground. At that point, everyone can open it with ease. Feel comfortable now?

  • Anelli di Saturno, nati ai tempi dei dinosauri! Cassini non ha smesso di stupirci! I dati forniti dalla sonda, in parte italiana, hanno suggerito che gli anelli di Saturno si siano formati successivamente al pianeta, più precisamente 10-100 milioni di anni fa, quando i dinosauri ancora vivevano sulla Terra. Ll gigante gassoso invece, si è formato 4.5 miliardi di anni fa, insieme al Sistema Solare. La scoperta è stata annunciata da un team di ricercatori di Sapienza Università di Roma. Il gruppo ha analizzato le misure della gravità e della massa di Saturno e del suo sistema di anelli. Tali misure ci sono state mandate proprio dalla sonda Cassini prima di terminare il suo viaggio tra gli strati dell’atmosfera del pianeta. La sonda ci aveva già fornito dati sulla composizione degli anelli, che risultano costituiti dal 99% di ghiaccio e dalla’1% di impurità contaminanti. La quantità di queste particelle ha reso possibile determinare, in base al suo tempo di accumulo, il periodo di formazione degli anelli. Un’ipotesi molto accreditata per la formazione di questi detriti è l’impatto tra una cometa e una luna di Saturno.
