This is Ernest J. King's United States Naval Academy graduation photograph, taken in 1901. King served as the commander in chief of the U. S. fleet and chief of naval operations during World War II.
Ernest Joseph King (1878-1956) was born in Lorain, Ohio. From 1915 through the First World War, he was assigned to the staff of Admiral Henry Mayo. Following that conflict and another tour at the Naval Academy, Captain King commanded a submarine flotilla at the New London, Connecticut submarine base.
In August 1928, following flight training and further service at sea, King became assistant chief of the bureau of aeronautics. Promoted to rear admiral in 1933, he was made chief of the aeronautics bureau. During the late 1930s, he commanded the fleet's aircraft carriers. In early 1941, King was appointed to lead the Atlantic Fleet.
After Pearl Harbor, King returned to Washington, D.C. to command the U. S. fleet in December 1941 and also direct naval operations beginning in March 1942. Through the rest of World War II, he guided the Navy's plans and global operations. King was promoted to the new rank of fleet admiral in December 1944. After the war King left his wartime offices, though he retained an advisory role. #navy#ohio#lorain#admiral
