  • **EPISODE ANNOUNCEMENT** Giant redwoods often exceed 2,000 years in age, giant #sequoias and baobabs reach up to 3,000, and large canopy trees found throughout Amazonia range from 400 to 1,400 years old. Earth is home to many ancient beings whose lifespans far exceed our own. However, for years now, many observers have witnessed significant tree mortality and Earth’s largest living organisms are not immune to this phenomena. If temperatures rise by 4 degrees C within this century, we may witness the death of these ancient ones. This week the #ForTheWild crew is happy to bring you a conversation with Dr. William Laurance. He is one of the most highly cited #scientists *globally* in the field of of ecology and environmental science. With works that have been cited over 50,000 times, he is recognized as a leading voice for conservation. Dr. Laurance’s critical research focuses on the impacts of intensive land-uses, such as habitat fragmentation, #logging, hunting, and #wildfires, as well as on tropical forests and their biodiversity. Join us this WEDNESDAY for a conversation between he and Ayana where they chat about the disappearance ancient trees, protected areas, climatic change, the impacts of ecological threats on biodiversity + more you’ll have to listen to learn about! #ForTheWild #newepisode #podcast #podcasting #biodiversity #forests #deforestation #rewilding #rainforest #amazon #DrWilliamLaurance #canopy #oldgrowth #ecology #deepecology # 📷: Getty

  • Things sure look different from up there! 🤩 I hosted Dr. Vicky Oelze during her recent visit to our department. She gave a fantastic talk, sharing her work in the tall canopies of the African rainforests 🌴 She climbs into abandoned chimpanzee nests and collects individual strands of fur left behind 🙊 She then analyzes them for their isotope values, which can tell us what they’ve been eating- specifically, how much meat each individual has been consuming, and who benefits from each hunt. This allows us to learn about the complex social relationships chimpanzees fosters with their community members . Dr. Oelze is an assistant professor in biological anthropology at UC Santa Cruz, and director of the “Primate Ecology and Molecular Anthropology” (PEMA) lab 🔬 Her work focuses on the diet and ecology of extant great apes 🦍, prehistoric humans 🏺, and fossil hominins 💀, and spans broader topics targeting reconstruction of habitat use of our ancient ancestors. . She is currently studying meat eating in chimpanzees in the Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivoire, Tai forest), termite fishing in the savannas of Tanzania (Isaa valley), and maternal investment and weaning in bonobos in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She utilizes techniques that have traditionally been applied for reconstructing ancient hominin diets to help elucidate extant great ape behavior. . . . #womeninscience #wearestemsquad #womenscientists #ecology #primates #chimpanzee #stableisotopes #womeninstem #phd #gradlife #ucsb #ucsc #seminar #africa #rainforest #conservation #wildlife #gorilla #bonobo #greatape #maxplanck

  • Spilotes pullatus 👇👇👇 . Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil. . . . . Spilotes pullatus is the largest snake in its family, can reach almost 3 meters (this one from the photo, measures almost 2.5 meters)! It can be found throughout South America until Mexico, in North America. Although it may frighten you with its size, it has no venom. They are generalists, that is, they eat different types of prey, and can hunt them holy on land as well as up in the vegetation. #snake #bio #biology #biologia #life #herp #zoology #vida #serpente #animal #herping #herpetology #wild #wildlife #brwildanimals #brasilnature #brazil #rainforest #tropical #tropic #altlanticrainforest #mataatlantica #bahia #nature #photooftheday

It's one the things that when I'm doing, I'm not looking to find a reason for. We finally reached the ancient rainforests in northeast of Australia 🌴 #rainforest #australia #nature #northeast

  • On an aerial tram ride through the canopy level of the rainforest, with the highest tree being anywhere from 40-60 m (130-190 ft). One tree species you can see at this level is commonly referred to as the “broccoli tree” (Vochysia alleni) due to it’s resemblance to the vegetable 🥦 #trees #nature #rainforest #costarica
