  • “Once upon a time we were the standard colors of a rainbow, cheery and certain of ourselves. At some point, we all began to stumble into the in-betweens, the murky colors made dark and complicated by resentment and quiet anger. At some point, my mother slid so off track she sank into hues of gray, a world drawn only in shadows.“ ― Emily X.R. Pan, The Astonishing Color of After - - - This book sat on my TBR for most of last year, so I decided to make it my FIRST read of 2019. AND it’s also the January pick for #WhyNotYA book club with @epicreads and @belletrist so all the more reason the read it this month! As I was creating my 2019 reading challenge on @goodreads I was lamenting that there are SO MANY book that I just don’t get to in a year and Kelly (@bookcrushin) recommended audio books, so I can read while doing all the fun life things, like folding laundry. 🙄 So I’m happy to report that this was my FIRST audio book… and I kind of loved it! The audio book of The Astonishing Color of After is particularly awesome because the narrator not only does fabulous accents for certain characters, but also reads words and phrases in Mandarin that I would have honestly had NO CLUE how to pronounce. Overall it was a really great experience, 4/5 ❤️s! The descriptions in the book are beautiful, specifically of colors (as expected from the title) and of amazing sounding foods. The interweaving of the real and imagined and magical was really wonderfully done. AND this book won the Book Shimmy Award in the Mental Health Matters category (for tackling topics of grief, depression, suicide, and biracial identity). Basically, if The Astonishing Color of After is still sitting on your TBR too, now is the time to read it! - - - Are you a fan of audio books? I think I still prefer a good old-fashion hardcover, but I’ll definitely be including more audio books in my reading rotation.

  • Despite all the hype I had very vague idea what Eleanor Oliphant is about. The book is good and very readable. If you haven’t read it, you may stop here and try it, I doubt you will be disappointed. At first I wasn’t convinced – it is clear from the very few first pages the Eleanor’s mental health is not fine and I felt that the author encourages me to laugh at the heroine, to be honest it made me uncomfortable. But the more I read the more I knew it wasn’t the case. I even laughed aloud a few times but always felt I laughed with Eleanor and not at her. The style is light and charming and the story, even though simple in a way, makes you engrossed pretty quickly. I always feel heartened when the author doesn’t show mental problems and especially depression as something that makes you write sad poems and generally appear as extremely attractive for the rest of the world. I get rash and am sneezing when I see it. Here, Honeyman did really well and did her Eleanor justice in portraying her honestly and with lots of empathy and care. That makes the book an uplifting experience, although I teared up more often than not. I have some problems with the end of the book. I adore the idea of relationship not being a cure for Eleanor’s problems. She is not in the state of mind to start a romantic relationship, but she needs caring people around her. It was presented beautifully. On the other hand – the ending felt rushed and suddenly, after such trauma and being left alone for years, Eleanor is recovering (to some extent, but still) so quickly, it felt unreal. And no meds are even used. Good for her, of course, but in a way it slightly destroyed the whole realistic value of the whole portrayal. Maybe it was so close to being great and that is why I’m complaining, although it was still very good? #bookstagramfeature #bookstagrampl #bookstagramtopasja #instabook #bookstagrammer #eleanoroliphantiscompletelyfine #gailhoneyman #eleanoroliphantmasięcałkiemdobrze #igreads #booksandcoffee #coffelover #booksandseasons #winterandbooks #czytambolubie #kochamczytać #ilovereading #bookstagram #wyzwanielc2019 #bookworm #ilovebooks #libraryofbookstagram #bookreview

  • One of my favorite books! It’s currently on loan to my boyfriend who had never read until I practically forced him to😊 ☞ I loved almost EVERY book I read in my high school English classes (which was a very pleasant surprise!) The only 2 I didn’t like (I actually DESPISED) were Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.🙅🏼‍♀️ ☞ HOWEVER, some of my favorites included: ↠ To Kill a Mockingbird ↠ The Great Gatsby ↠ A Farewell to Arms (I think I was the only person in my grade to adore this book????) ↠ One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (same with this one lol) ↠ The Road ↠ Chronicle of a Death Foretold ↠ Romeo & Juliet and Taming of the Shrew (obviously, my man Will is the best) • • #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #tkam #tokillamockingbird #americanliterature #literature #harperlee

  • “Qnd eldr. They were words I’d heard before. Breathe fire. The Riki said them to each other on the battlefield.” - Adrienne Young :: Don’t you just love Winter? How when it snows a million tiny white beads fall from the sky above and cover the ground. How when it gets cold enough frost hugs the trees like a blanket and makes the world around us look like a winter wonderland. It’s gorgeous, really. Does it snow where you’re from?
