  • When most visitors come to #Hawaii, they’re blissfully unaware of the climate-change threats we’re facing — or of the urgency with which we’re starting to tackle them. We have no time to waste: Our environment is our economy. With rising seas and temperatures, we will lose beaches, coral reefs, and unique ecosystems. Plus, Hawaii is one of the rare areas on earth that’s expected to see not only more intense storms, but also more of them. . For those of us in agriculture, the situation is serious. Arabica coffee, the crop we grow under @rustyshawaiian and broker/sell under @islacoffee, is quite temperature sensitive. And as the grantwriter for the Synergistic Hawaii Agriculture Council, I also see climate-change effects on Hawaii’s floriculture and papaya industries. . To spread awareness of our state’s efforts to combat and adapt to climate change, I’ve created an IG stories’ highlight called “Climate: Hawaii.” Check in with it periodically to see what we’re up to. . The world’s eyes are upon us: As @govhawaii said at the first annual @hi_climate conference, “We are the first state to set a 100% renewable energy goal and we are the first state to commit to decarbonize our economy by 2045.” . This photo, by @vanishingplaces, shows what we are up against. She’s documenting various vulnerable places in Hawaii right now, so it’s worth checking out her IG. . #Regram @vanishingplaces: (3/3) The waves come incredibly close to the homes along certain parts of the North Shore in Oahu. These homes are less than a half mile from the world’s best surf spots. 🌊 This aerial was taken at low tide. At high tide water gets even closer and a large swell can cause topping into yards. 🏝 On an unrelated note: My shoreline recognizance work entailed chatting with the local lifeguards. And the movie depiction of lifeguards is a real thing on the North Shore. I was so distracted I had to ask about the tides twice... 🤩

  • In Hawaii, we greet friends, loved ones or strangers with Aloha, which means love. Aloha is the key word to the universal spirit of real hospitality, which makes Hawaii renowned as the world's centre of understanding and fellowship. Try meeting or leaving people with Aloha. You'll be surprised by their reaction - Duke Kahanamoku

  • The oldest house on Maui, built in 1834. It was the home of a medical missionary, Reverend Dwight Baldwin. Him and his wife, Charlotte Fowler, traveled by ship from New England around South America’s Cape Horn on a six-month voyage to the island of O‘ahu. They were assigned to Hawai‘i Island first, arriving on Maui in 1835.
