The duc d'Antin, director of the king's buildings, wrote to Louis XIV: "I was at the Trianon inspecting the second writing desk by Boulle; it is as beautiful as the other and suits the room perfectly." Not until the Trianon inventory of 1729 were the pieces described as "commodes." (They are often called commodes Mazarines because they stood during the nineteenth century and the first third of the twentieth in the Bibliothèque Mazarine in Paris.) From the , the design proved to be immensely popular, although it has also been criticized for an "awkward treatment of forms," meaning, in particular, the four extra spiral legs that were required to support the weight of the bronze mounts and marble top. Nevertheless, the Boulle workshop made at least five other examples of this expensive model, including the Metropolitan's. Traditionally, they have been dated between 1710 and 1732, the year of Boulle's death; by 1730, however, the decorative style of the Sun King's long reign had been supplanted by the lighter forms of the Régence and early Rococo, and a date of 1710–20 is probably more accurate. . | @metmuseum website

The medallion was probably a prize for the winner of a musical contest: the inscription in Greek—the cultural language of the city—identifies the youth as "Gennadios, most skilled in music." The masterfully naturalistic image, drawn with a fine point on gold leaf, was applied to the upper surface of a dark blue glass disk. A second, clear disk was then placed on top of the first, to seal the image. The beveled edges of the disks suggest that the medallion was meant to be mounted and worn as a pendant. . The medallion dates from a time when the Roman Empire was increasingly aware of the need to better protect such wealthy eastern provinces as Egypt. Gennadios's city, the major port at the mouth of the Nile, would become the third-largest city in the Byzantine Empire, after Constantinople and Rome. The first, eighteen-foot-tall sculpture proved too large and was replaced in 1894 by a streamlined version, five feet shorter. It became one of New York’s most popular landmarks, and the sculptor capitalized on its success by issuing numerous reductions. This cast is a half-size model of the second version, produced from a cement cast once owned by White. These hollow ceramic sculptures are thought by many to be associated with a god of dance, music, and joy. . Another compelling interpretation, however, relates them to a cult of pulque, an intoxicating beverage made from the fermented sap of the maguey plant. The animated faces, puffy cheeks, and swollen protruding tongues are regarded as evidence of intoxication. The figures may depict ritual participants, or even sacrificial victims. The survival of many more smiling Remojadas heads than bodies suggest to some a possible ceremonial decapitation and destruction of the bodies. . This bare-chested figure, with open mouth and filed teeth, stands energetically with legs spread and arms lifted as if caught in mid-motion. The garb of this celebrant consists of circular earrings, a beaded necklace and bracelet along with a loincloth decorated with laterally symmetrical patterns. On his cap are ollin symbols, a sign for motion. .
