Yesterday I held an interactive video town meeting with students from five Vermont middle schools to discuss civic engagement and democracy, as well as some of the crucial challenges facing the United States. It is critically important that students understand from a young age that democracy is not a spectator sport. Democracy only works when ordinary people all across this country are informed and engaged on the major issues facing our nation. I am very grateful for the teachers at Albany Community School, Crossett Brook Middle School, Putney Central School, Randolph Union Middle School and Twinfield Union School for helping organize this meeting, and most of all, for the wonderful kids who participated. I was very impressed by their questions, and really enjoyed taking with them.
The Senate just passed my resolution to stop U.S. military support for the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen. This is the first time ever that the Senate has voted to end an unauthorized war.
What the Senate did today is say that the United States Congress is sick and tired of abdicating its constitutional responsibility on matters of war. We will not continue to have our military posture dictated by a despotic, murderous regime in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi-led intervention in Yemen has resulted in the worst humanitarian crisis on Earth. That crisis is 85,000 children starving to death; 10,000 new cases of cholera every single week; and the United Nations telling us that Yemen is on the verge of imminent famine.
I want to thank my colleagues and the many people at the grassroots level who helped us pass this historic resolution. Today, 45 years after the passage of the War Powers Act, the U.S. Senate finally used that authority for the first time.

We have a president of the United States who wants to shut down the government. That’s incomprehensible.

Sears wants to give its executives $25 million in bonuses after closing over 100 stores and laying off thousands of employees. My friends, this is what a rigged economy is all about.

Republicans all over this country are going to unprecedented lengths to prevent incoming Democratic officials from exercising the powers of the offices they have won. It's happening in Wisconsin. It is happening in Michigan. And it will keep happening unless we stand up and fight back.

I was glad to see 400 Vermonters attend our senior holiday meal in Burlington on Sunday. I really enjoy bringing together seniors to share a lovely dinner during the holiday season, socialize with new and old friends and hear some wonderful music by local student choirs. We also got to discuss some of the challenges facing seniors, including the high cost of prescription drugs and the need to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare. This was just one of six free Senior Holiday Dinners my office is organizing throughout Vermont in the month of December.
